Script:
I’m a Christian, a patriotic American, and a free-market, shrink-the-government conservative– who likewise happens to be gay.
What I recommend by that is my worths define me, while my sexual preference in some cases feels more like– well, a footnote. Literally. I “came out” as gay in a footnote in my book, End of Discussion.
My orientation is simply one part of the story when it concerns my political beliefs. It’s not the totality of who I am.
Some unimaginative leftists like to claim that this licenses me as a “self-hating” gay individual. Far too usually, people are sorted by their gender, or their skin color, or their sexual preference, or any other immutable characteristic that has definitely nothing to do with worths or ideas.
To be candid, in my life and work, I invest a lot more time writing and thinking about the failures of Obamacare, for instance, than I do about “LGBT issues,” whatever that term might recommend on any offered day.
Similar to any conservative, I desire taxes low, the military strong, and don’t even get me begun on single payer healthcare or late-term abortion. I’m a conservative due to the truth that when I think of these problems seriously, I normally end up on the very best end of the spectrum. It’s that basic.
Here’s the important things: I totally recognize how fortunate I am to live in a country and a time where I can be openly gay and live a normal life. Which’s in large part thanks to the effort of gay rights activists who’ve blazed a trail for individuals like me– people who had it much harder than I do, and people who likely would not share my politics. I am genuinely grateful to them.
It’s a brand-new age now. Why ostracize members of our neighborhood who do not toe the left-wing political line? Exit tally reveals that in the last four general elections, between 14 and 29 percent of LGBT citizens pulled the lever for the GOP. That’s a lot of us. Now, does that mean that everybody support every component of the celebration’s platform? Never.
I know that many conservatives, consisting of some here at PragerU, do not see eye-to-eye with me on all of these concerns. And yet, here I am– making a PragerU video. Which entirely highlights another genuinely important point: Conservatives are frequently far more tolerant of dissenting views than those who elegant themselves the torch-carriers of objectivity.
Nope. Cross the left on a hot-button social concern, and you’re out.
You see, some on the left believe that they’re entitled to handle the concepts or votes of specific groups of individuals– particularly minorities and so-called “victim groups.” For some, it comes down to a cynical calculation: Without the frustrating assistance of those groups, the Democrats would win truly couple of elections.
