I was raised a practicing Muslim and remained one for nearly half my life. I participated in madrassas, that is, Islamic schools, and memorized large parts of the Quran. As a child, I lived in Mecca for a time and regularly went to the Grand Mosque. As a teen, I sympathized with the Muslim Brotherhood.
At 22 while my family was residing in Kenya, my father arranged my marital relationship to a member of our household clan, a male that I had never ever fulfilled. I ran away, made my method to Holland, studied there and eventually was chosen a member of the Dutch parliament. Now I reside in the United States.
Simply put, I have actually seen Islam from the inside and the outside.
I believe that a reform of Islam is possible and needed. And just Muslims can make that reform a truth. We in the West can not remain on the sidelines as though the outcome of this struggle has nothing to do with us. The rest of the world will pay a horrible rate if the jihadists win and the hope for a reformed Islam dies. The fear attacks in New York, London, Madrid, Paris and numerous other places are just a preview for what is to come.
For this reason, I think that it’s foolish to insist, as Western leaders constantly do, that the violent acts devoted in the name of Islam can somehow be separated from the faith itself. For more than a decade, my message has been simple: Islam is not a religious beliefs of peace.
What I do state is that the call to violence and the justification for it are explicitly stated in the spiritual texts of Islam. This theologically approved violence is there to be triggered by any number of offenses, including but not restricted to infidelity, homosexuality, apostasy and blasphemy– that is, to leave Islam.
Those who endure this intolerance do so at their danger.
As someone who has known what it is to live without flexibility, I enjoy in wonder as those who call themselves progressives and liberals– individuals who declare to think so fervently in individual liberty and minority rights– make typical cause with the forces on the planet that manifestly posture the best threats to that really flexibility and those really minorities.
That invitation was withdrawn after trainees and professors protested my criticism of Islam. By identifying critical evaluation of Islam as naturally “racist,” we make the opportunities of reformation far less most likely. Why should there be of Islam?
Instead of contorting Western intellectual customs so as not to anger our Muslim fellow people, we need to safeguard both those traditions and the Muslim dissidents who take excellent dangers to promote them. We should support these brave men and women in every method possible.
Imagine a platform for Muslim dissidents that communicated their message through YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These are the Muslims we ought to be supporting– for our sake as much for the sake of Islam.

Is Islam a Religion of Peace? Is Islam a faith of peace? If the jihadists win and the hope for a reformed Islam dies, the rest of the world will pay an awful rate. What I do say is that the call to violence and the validation for it are clearly mentioned in the spiritual texts of Islam. By labeling important evaluation of Islam as naturally “racist,” we make the chances of reformation far less likely.
