There are 2 views of the Israeli Military– what you hear in the majority of the media, and the truth. I’m going to tell you the truth.
I was the Commander of British Forces in Afghanistan. I have actually fought in battle zone around the world including Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Macedonia and Iraq.I was also present throughout the conflict in Gaza in 2014.
Based upon my experience and on my observations: the Israel Defense Force, the IDF, does more to secure the rights of civilians in a combat zone than any other army in the history of warfare.
Why is this so?
Israel is a good nation with Western worths, run on democratic principles. Israel has no more interest in war than Belgium does. Israel has never ever started a war. The only reason it ever fights is to protect itself. And it needs to safeguard itself because, unlike Belgium, it is surrounded by nations and armed groups that wish to destroy it.
Judaism, with its unmatched moral standards, remains a major impact on the people of Israel. I state this as a non-Jew.
The army is composed extremely of citizen soldiers.
Israel is a small nation with a little expert army. To fight a war it depends on its conscripts and its reservists.
Nowhere was the necessary morality and decency of the IDF more obvious than in the Gaza War of 2014. If ever there was a simply defensive war, this was it.
The war was begun by Hamas, the horror organization, designated as such by the United States State Department, that runs the Gaza strip. In the very first 6 months of 2014, Hamas released hundreds of rockets at Israeli civilians.
After repeated cautions from Israel to stop, the Israeli Air Force finally carried out accuracy strikes to stop the rocket-fire. And the IDF advanced into Gaza to damage a network of horror tunnels that Hamas had built to assault Israeli communities near the Gaza border.
The IDF took extraordinary steps to offer Gaza civilians notification of targeted areas, dropping millions of brochures, broadcasting radio messages, sending texts and making 10s of thousands of phone calls. Never ever in the history of warfare has an army telephoned its enemy and informed them where they are going to drop their bombs.
Numerous IDF missions that could have gotten Hamas military capabilities were terminated to avoid civilian casualties, increasing the danger to Israeli residents and soldiers.
In spite of all of this, naturally innocent civilians were eliminated. Every war is complicated and chaotic, and errors are regular. But mistakes are not war criminal offenses.
Hamas, on the other hand, devoted war criminal activities as main government policy.
Hamas intentionally placed its military properties among the civilian population, concealing weapons in schools and healthcare facilities, and placing rocket launchers alongside apartment buildings, then required those civilians to stay in locations they understood would be assaulted. They likewise instructed their people to report the lie that every Gazan killed was a civilian, even if they were in fact fighters.
