  7. It has always been weird to me how a man responsible for like 40% of the current us territory is so obscure to Americans. Probably because he lasted such a short time and didn’t make as much of a big fuss around him

  8. President Andrew Jackson won his seat by shutting down the federal reserve in the United States. I wouldn't be surprised if the Fed had something to do with getting him out odf office. If fact, that sounds very familiar today

  10. No doubt about it: Polk was an imperialist. He continued the genocidal policies of his mentor and hero, Andrew Jackson. Under Polk, the US stole half of Mexico in a war the US instigated. It slaughtered thousands of native Americans as it consolidated its conquest. The Native Americans of Taos to this day recall how the American army massacred so many of their ancestors at the war's conclusion. This Hillsdale College professor is an apologist for US expansion and imperialist takeover. The US was not spreading democracy. It was expanding capitalism and the profits it reaped for robber barons. It was making made people of color second-class citizens. It mercilessly exploited native and imported labor. Professor McCoy is a propagandist for the sort of simple-minded US history for which Hillsdale College is known. Serious historians of the United States laugh at this sort of knee-jerk patriotic history. However, it's a real threat to a more nuanced and compassionate view of the US past since so many states are attempting to develop k-12 curricula based upon the Hillsdale model.

  13. I'm sure he thought he was bringing freedom and prosperity to the "heathen savage". Just as the Jesuit missionaries did and then the protestant missionaries, manifest destiny was American imperialism against the indigenous peoples. Their form of "prosperity" brought a huge loss to the quality of life of indigenous peoples. Polk deserves to be shoved into obscurity for those efforts.

  14. If manifest destiny never happened. Nazi Germany would control all of Europe and most of Africa. Communist Russia would dominate toward the middle east. Imperial Japan would control Korea, coastal china, the Philippines, Australia and most of the pacific Islands.

    Mexico would extend all the way to Canada.

    Manifest Destiny enabled America to develop the economic and military that was used to save billions of lives.

  21. People forget that a consequence of Manifest Destiny, is that now, the USA, is the second most larger Spanish Speaker nation of the world.
    And in Mexico people very few people speak English. (And most of the time, their English is very limited to the main interest of people)

    Basically, USA is becoming an Hispanic Country.

    In the future, a Garcia will became an US president.
