Jesus Covers Your Shame (The Significance of the Cross)
What does the death of Jesus mean for our experience of shame? Can we truly be forgiven for all our sins? In this video, which is part of the Talbot class I teach, “In Defense of the Resurrection,” I explain how Jesus being naked on the cross is meant to portray that he fully covered all our sins.

This guy is a national treasure. Thank you so much for this one. I have much sin, and have struggled with grace and shame both, in coming to God. I recently read a book on shame by Louis B Schmede which was great, and helpful. You brought up some core issues with your provocative talk here. God bless you. Much love, always, from California.
Sean, thank you.
This just hit me in a very profound way. Thank you so much Sean for posting this video. This is a dimension of the cross that I never considered and I can’t tell you how this just impacted me. God bless!
I was watching over your video addressing Christian questions roleplaying as an atheist.
YOUR ANSWERS – Were often very full. You were able to address all the questions with reason and logic. Never once did you have to dodge or refuse to answer.
THE QUESTIONS – Often the questions showed a lack of reasoning. You would address questions on prophecy by simply pointing out the obvious that prophecies could be worked to be fulfilled by those who know the prophecy. I'm hoping these individuals stopped believing because of these reasons. Your answers as an atheist actually work regardless of someone being an atheist.
THE FOLLOWUPS – Many times there were additional things asked where someone would not truthfully answer. Your best moment was when you asked if Jesus could or could not do something. The individual didn't want to answer a true dichotomy question. It is possible to say, "I don't know." but it is ontologically true that either Jesus could or could not do this.
So overall, I'm hoping there was a re-evaluation on why they believe these claims. Your straight forward addressing of questions (Without dodging) and the other side often showing faulty reasoning and dodging creates a weird issue… I have to ask:
What convinces you to be a Christian?
Pretend I'm the atheist (I'm actual agnostic) and you're the individual giving me the question.
I find this subject engrossing.
Thank you for sharing this.
I'm in therapy for Narcissistic Abuse. I've learned to recognise shame and shame triggers.
Shame is different from embarrassment.
It's not easily healed from.
Shame ALWAYS follows abuse.
Abuse involves trauma to the victim.
The world is full of traumatised individuals.
One day while walking home from therapy, I cried quietly behind my sunglasses. I said to Jesus "I'm so broken". I felt ashamed of my brokenness.
I felt Him say in a reassuring, matter-of-fact way "I came to heal the brokenhearted".
I cried with relief, as waves of comfort washed over me.
I think about these words and about these aspects of Jesus' character every day.
I love Him for them.
Someone once told me that guilt says ,"I did something wrong", but shame says, "there's something wrong with me." Guilt is easy to deal with. I confess and there is a consequence and it's dealt with. Often we look at the cross as dealing with my guilt. And it does. But in cultures where shame is the big deal, there is no going back. That is why honour killing is big in some societies. Not because they're nasty, but because that is the only way to deal with shame. As the West walks away from God, Cancel Culture is starting to do the same. There's no forgiveness, even if the so called sin was a long time ago. But I died with Christ and was made a new person. The shame is dealt with.
Why is there such an obsession with sex (nakedness) in Christian circles such that sex is read into everything? It’s as if the purity phenomenon and its ills are regaining influence in Christian circles with all its self righteousness over premarital sex, divorce, homosexuality, etc.
Wow, so profound.
