You’ve heard about the black card?
No– not the one from Visa or American Express. And people that have utilized it to get both wealth and impact.
If this seems like something you may want to own, you ought to know that there is just one method you can get your hands on it: you need to be born with black skin.
That’s the only requirement. Really.
You can be poor, middle class, or rich– it does not matter. The black card will still provide upon you a whole history of injustice, even if you’ve never been oppressed.
Flash the black card, and a lot of white people will cower.
Play the black card expertly, and you can win awards, make millions– all the while claiming that the people who got you there somehow hate you.
With a black card, you can sell books filled with indecipherable prose. Since with a card that effective, who cares if your words make any sense?
You can call yourself a “civil rights leader” and shake down multinational corporations, or you can torch your own community since you didn’t like the outcome of a grand jury verdict.
Paradoxically, the people you may think have the most genuine claim to the black card refuse to utilize it.
Take my grandpa:
He raised me from the time I was 9 years of ages. Born in 1941 in rural North Carolina, he began operating at age five, laying out tobacco to dry on a sharecropping farm. Jim Crow, separate drinking fountains, and the KKK were ever-present truths.
He was 17 when he wed my grandma. He made a living cleansing homes and office buildings till he conserved up sufficient cash to open his own cleansing service.
The thing is, he never played any card. If they had problems, they didn’t blame any person.
And they raised me to do the same.
Tasks were a requirement in their family. Was reading the Bible every early morning before school.
I didn’t like the Bible readings, and I hated the tasks. I recognize now that these little acts of discipline, although in some cases suppressing, had a strong, favorable effect on my character.
I was a first-generation college student. This was expected to be the ticket to success. However it wasn’t. I left college with a mountain of financial obligation and no practical abilities. I had simply $80 dollars in my checking account and really few prospects. I might have quit. I might have dug deep into my history and stated myself a natural item of ancestral oppression. I might have played the black card and absolved myself of all responsibility for my own dumb decisions.
Other than, I didn’t. Because it would have ruined my grandpa’s tradition.
I am happy that he had the fortitude to turn absolutely nothing into something; and I have no objective of reversing that something back into an absolutely nothing.
My attitude comes with a rate, nevertheless. Then the validity of your blackness is right away called into concern because if you are born black and you don’t accept your natural status as a victim.
