This episode is all about the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States, and specifically it is about the one item that began it all: the Sputnik satellite. Tension between the U.S. and Russia isn’t new. Decades ago, when the Soviet Union launched the first-ever satellite into space, Americans eerily felt that Russians were watching them constantly. Sputnik also may be the reason for America’s urgency to land on the moon in the 1960s and why JFK uttered those famous words: “We choose to go to the moon.” It’s an item with countless historical ramifications, which is why Glenn purchased one of the Sputnik test models in late 2023 for this museum … or did he?! When his research team informed him that he MAY have bought a fake item, Glenn decided to take YOU along for the ride to discover the truth. Is the Sputnik model in his museum collection fraudulent? And if it is a true test model, then how the heck did a prized possession from the Soviet Union end up in Texas, USA?!

The fact it is so light might be a good sign. Russia is the world's top producer of titanium and while we still use steel they used the lighter and stronger metal in subs. For any space launch, every pound adds cost. Titanium is still expensive so the ground mockups may have used cheaper heavier material for test, knowing the final material would be better. When built for launch it is likely 2 or 3 were built to go to space, as NASA often says they double up on everything. On the other side if it is missing guts, perhaps it is a display mockup. As NASA rose and other items took center stage, such a display might have been disposed of with a cleaning out of "junk" to make room for Mir and Soyuz stuff. Even our own NASA has torn down many of their early stuff or taped over the original moon landing tapes. While it may be tough to find the total truth I would suggest opening it up. Does it house working parts and if so are they complete. An external power port may suggest to a display mockup to activate a radio for tourist, like a Morris code set up I saw as a kid in DC in the Air and Space M. Also with opening at least you likely can date parts. I hope you were not totally taken and can do a part two following up on the possibles I mentioned. I think it would be cool if you found their version of NCC 1701 that hung in the Smithsonian's A&S. Goodluck.

I dont know what to believe if he is so incorrect on the basics. Since I began my studies for my HAM radio licenses I learned the effects of the sun on so much here on earth. What most people don't know is that the U.S. could have launched a satellite into low earth orbit well before the Russians did, how ever by waiting until the Russians launched Sputnik it created a sense of urgency that convinced the American public that the Russians were far ahead of us and the only way to catch up way thorough missive amounts of SPENDING. Had the U.S. put a spacecraft in space before the Russians did the funding would never have been APROVED!!!
Having said that I believe the investments that the U.S. made in the space program has paid off immensely in technological advancement's.
