When did sports get so political? When did ESPN wind up being MSNBC? When did Colin Kaepernick become Mahatma Gandhi?
I like sports. I always have. Maturing, I played every sport I could. Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson posters embellished the walls of my bedroom. Sports remains my passion, and for two decades has in fact been my occupation. I enjoy that sports permits us a break from day-to-day worries, to lose ourselves in the video game– where the rules are clear, where skill guidelines supreme, and surprise is constantly possible.
And I like sports not just for my own self-indulgent factors, however for what it does for the nation. Sure, a movie may be fantastic, but you do not see Democrats and Republicans high-fiving and hugging after viewing Tropic Thunder.
I’m refrained from doing. Sports are a living civics lesson. Consider it. Every team represents its neighborhood– a city, a college, a high school. It is, after all, the New York Yankees. The player who wears the group uniform represents that community.
Now, let’s take it one action even more: a soldier, similarly in uniform, represents his nation. He is a member, in result, of the nation’s group.
