In case you had not discovered, life is tough, unforeseeable and intricate. You can’t change this. It’s the nature of things. But you can prepare yourself for the next undesirable surprise.
How? By developing strength.
Durability is the ability to bounce back from life’s inevitable frustrations, failures, and discomforts.
Let me utilize an example here.
Every ride would be an unpleasant experience if cars and trucks didn’t have shock absorbers. The ride through life without shock absorbers– that is, durability– would be the same. So, without constructing resilience– your own internal shock absorbers– it’s not possible to lead a productive and happy life.
Resilience is the reverse of fragility. To be vulnerable ways that practically whatever upsets you. And if just about everything upsets you, you will spend a lot of time mad and hurt. And if you spend a great deal of time angry and hurt, you will not be a happy person.
Here, I’m not focusing on extreme health problem, the death of a loved one or any squashing life-changing occasion. In such cases, individuals typically need aid to recuperate. For most of us, such circumstances are rare– while the slights and dissatisfactions of ordinary life are not. And for those, we require durability.
OK, then. How do you establish strength? Here are some suggestions to get you started, drawn from my forty-plus years as a psychiatrist.
First, get some point of view.
Go back and examine your scenario with as much neutrality as you can. “How bad is this problem?” “Have I overemphasized it?”
In some cases my clients think a dissatisfied event is much more serious than it really is– typically since it’s enhanced by evoking an unpleasant youth problem. Frequently getting viewpoint is as easy as asking yourself this question: “What’s the worst thing that can take place?” Generally you’ll discover the worst thing isn’t that bad– and isn’t even likely to take place.
Second, compare the undeserved bad things that have occurred to you with the unearned good ideas that have occurred to you.
When I ask my clients to do this, they inevitably conclude that the unearned good in their life far exceeds the undeserved bad. In my own case, I didn’t make the exceptionally good fortune of my grandparents moving to America, or that life-saving penicillin was readily available to me in my youth when I was sick.
In light of this, possibly things aren’t so bad. In reality, they’re most likely respectable.
Third, toughen up.
Life strikes you from all directions– health, individual relationships, work challenges, household concerns. To deal with them, you need to build up your mental durability. The earlier in life one starts this procedure, the better.
That’s why parents who coddle their children and secure them from every hurt and failure are refraining from doing them any favors. Nor are colleges that offer students with so-called “safe areas.” To toughen up, you require to press yourself. How do you know what you’re capable of if you don’t do that?
