Females in the United States and in Western Europe are the freest and most liberated in human history. In lots of ways they are not simply doing along with guys, they are doing better. Women’s emancipation is one of the magnificences of Western civilization and one of the terrific chapters in the history of flexibility.
So, why then are those in the ladies’s movement, such as the leaders and members of activist groups like the National Organization for Women, the teachers in Women’s Studies departments at our colleges, and many women in the media, why are they still so discontented?
These feminists hardly acknowledge females’s progress.
Yes, they concede, that some advances have been made, but the fact that the majority of women reject their activist brand of feminism and think about themselves as free is, for this crowd, evidence of simply how entrenched patriarchy and inequality really are: females are so oppressed, they don’t even know it.
Year after year these activists make claims about females and violence, women and anxiety, ladies and eating disorders, ladies and work environment oppression– to support their views. Over the years, I have looked thoroughly at a number of these claims. What I have discovered is that much of the supporting proof, primarily victim data, is misleading and often flat out wrong.
Consider the problem of the so-called gender wage space. The number of times have you heard that, for the very same work, females receive 77 cents for every single dollar a man makes? This charge is continuously repeated by feminist activists and their supporters, yet it is so deeply misleading regarding verge on outright falsehood.
The 23-cent gender pay space is merely the difference between the typical revenues of all women and males working full-time. It does not measure for distinctions in occupations, positions, education, task period, or hours worked each week.
Now, wage-gap activists in groups like the American Association of University Women or the National Women’s Law Center they state, no, no– even when you control for these elements, females still earn less. Well it constantly turns out that they have actually left out one or two crucial information points.
Dig a little deeper below the surface and you discover that women are far more likely than guys to get in lower paying specialties like pediatrics or household medicine than higher-paying cardiology or anesthesiology. And even women who work full time put in about 7 percent fewer hours than guys. Ladies physicians are also far more most likely to take long leaves of absence– usually to start a household.
