Script:
Ward Cleaver, the iconic dad of the 1950s Television Show, “Leave It to Beaver,” is … a stud. And, no, this isn’t about fond memories for America in the 1950s.
A loud corner of American culture has been rebelling against the image of the 1950s since, oh … the 1950s. Can we a minimum of mesmerize the idea that in the rejection of that stereotypical 1950s rural daddy image, we tossed some metaphorical infants out with the bathwater? That if today’s males designed Ward Cleaver, America and the world would be much better locations?
Of Ward Cleaver we can similarly state this: He’s a male who takes care of business. He does not make reasons. He knows that his hard work and decision will ultimately win the day, if not this day.
Now, we can quibble about his approaches, nevertheless we can’t contest that he likes his spouse and kids, that they know he likes them, which he tries to do what’s finest for them– usually rather efficiently. What is not in conflict is that he’s the male of the house, that he wears that title with pride, and everybody, including his partner, likes that reality.
Ward wasn’t alone. There were great deals of other distinguished papas of that period: Ozzie Nelson of “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet;” Jim Anderson from “Father Knows Best;” one might argue George Bailey in the 1946 motion picture, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” They were grown-ups who had actually currently been through a Great Depression and, in a lot of cases, were veterans of World War II or, later on, the Korean War.
Their archetype outlasted the 1950s– Steve Douglas of “My Three Sons,” Mike Brady of “The Brady Bunch,” Howard Cunningham in “Happy Days,” and Cliff Huxtable in “The Cosby Show” (we’re talking television characters here) shared equivalent characteristics. Like all people who have really ever lived and whoever will live, these males had problems.
If you ask women what they truly prefer in a guy– or at least all those ladies who have actually grown out of their adolescent fascination with bad kids– they might not state Ward Cleaver, nevertheless they’ll describe most, if not all, of his qualities: Reliable; trustworthy; wise; positive, however not smug. A male who’s successful at work, however not a workaholic. A man who likes kids, however is not a kid himself.
