Thank you!
Despite some mistakes, England is, and will always be, a glorious nation.
Sowell is one of the greatest living Americans…
This was taught in schools in Britain up until the 80s , the the liberals deemed it inappropriate. Incredible!
As a brit thank you for educating people on our history and contributions to the world. Americas constitution was largely inspired by English parliamentary democracy and English common law, the forefathers of america were not year 0 revolutionaries but were educated men with a deep respect and understanding of tradtion and culture and the former colonies which adopted that approach have become some of the best more liberating places to live in the world. Its nice to see our history spoken about with respect for once. I'm all for taking a look at the past as long as its approached with nuance and contextualised whether that tells us good or bad things but in our days western history particularly the history of anglophere countries have been unfairly targeted.
It's ironic how those that hate us will say proper history is not taught in schools but I can tell you now most English kids will now full well about the slave trade or colonialism but try finding many who know about the abolishist movement or if they do painting it in anything other then a bad light, try finding many who know about magna carta and why it's important, try finding many who knows about equality under the law, free press etc. Not many will know that so in a way they are right but not for the reason they think.
West/Whites ended slavery.
It took a century , but succeeded…. by contrast Africa , India and Mid east…… never even thought of it
It’s kind of wild that we act like it’s such an accomplishment for kings to have had rules to follow.

Navies are used for domestic-oppression (where they aren’t, they still could be).
Accepting someone’s help in building an artificial harbor might mean selling the future of your nation & your people.
Trade-offs, constraints…
This is a very important message
Churchill was a racist and a bigoted imperialist who was singularly responsible for causing famines in Bengaul in East India that killed 6 million people. He rallied Britain to fight Hitler because the latter posed a threat to the sovereignty of the imperialist Britain, its wealth, and NOT because Hitler challenged the freedoms of the people. Nor did he care about the lives of Jews and Gypsies
The rise of Nazism in Germany was mainly because Britain and France (the greediest among European nations along with Russia) pushed Germany over the edge by forcing Germans into a humiliating treaty.
Churchill, by no means, can be compared to Lord Nelson or Oliver Cromwell or even Margaret Thatcher
RULE BRITANNIA BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES BRITONS NEVER WILL BE SLAVES
If Hitler would have won the entire world would be using public central banks and in charge of their own monetary systems. Hitler offered peace terms to britian returning all conquered lands except those where a majority of ethnic germans lived. On 9 seperate occasions through out the war. Meaning the holocaust could have been avoided if only Churchill would allow germany to keep their public central banking system. This is the main tool of control for the elites.
Proud to be British, we will always fight for justice even when the odds are so terrible that many of us may perish. 🇬🇧❤️
It's nice to see Great Britain being appreciated, especially in a day and age where history is no longer taught in schools, and if it is,it's been politicised.
Here in Australia, history involving Britain is taught portraying Britain as an oppressor of the worst kind, the British anti slavery movement is rarely mentioned, if at all.
This episode was really disappointing. The Magna Carta and English "civil war" are taught in schools routinely as pillars of British/white supremacy. The discussion of slavery left out three big ideas about freedom that schools either mention in passing or not at all.
Firstly, the initiative to free the slaves didn' t come from Quakers. It came from ENSLAVED PEOPLE THEMSELVES. The impact of two revolutions in one generation–the American and French–was absolutely critical in the success of the Haitian Revolution of 1804. Toussaint L'Ouverture's victory over a much larger force of Britain and French soldiers to create a third independent republic came at a huge cost: Toussaint's capture and lifetime jailing by Napoleon followed by OVER TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF REPARATIONS payments to France for depriving slaveowners of their income. The prospect of another Haiti accelerated divestment from slavery because Black people were now inspired to keep organizing.
Secondly, Britain didn't oppose slavery because it was intrinsically opposed to freedom or because Black organizers were particularly influential among White politicians. Britain opposed outright ownership of people as private property because their economic powerhouse at the time was based on highly profitable wage-slavery in cutting-edge factories with the world's best navy to defend trade. The British ruling class learned from America and France that colonies were too expensive and slavery too risky to maintain. Their game was to support anti-slavery to destabilize the plantation economies of their competitors with the exception of the USA. Freedom-loving British industry needed cheap Confederate cotton so the Royal Navy blockaded and harassed Union vessels during the US Civil War. THAT part you might hear about in class.
Thirdly, Britain didn't spread the rule of law to all its subjects throughout its Empire. As US slavery ended in 1862, the British Raj ramped up to provide a subcontinent for more obscene exploitation into another century, enforcing the caste system and drawing millions into indentured servitude around the world. Indians fought by any means necessary for decades to get the UK to "Quit India" until the end of World War 2 saw the end of Britain as the world's leading superpower. And even then, the British worked out that the best way to free India was to divide them along religious lines.
Africans who were colonized fared little better as Britain also exploited differences between nations and tribes. Troops slaughtered thousands to uphold the rule of law while putting down rebellions over land theft and resulting poverty and immiseraton. Britain said nothing about King Leopold's personal enslavement of the "Belgian" Congo. They did nothing about the freedom of non-whites after white-supremacist South Africa established apartheid in 1948 and annexed South-West Africa soon after. The UK nearly started World War 3 in 1952 to keep the Suez Canal out of African hands. When Rhodesia seceded unilaterally from British jurisdiction in 1961 rather than give up white-supremacist rule, no British troops were sent in to remove Ian Smith's government and defend the freedom of all British subjects.
Sowell glosses over these points with a remark about how post-colonial governments adopted British elements of freedom based on whether their leaders were democrats or dictators. Those leaders were products of the British Empire and Sowell's refusal to acknowledge the UK's actual role in selectively spreading freedom. I didn't get into the treatment of Indigenous nations on Turtle Island by colonists under British and then US and Canadian regimes. Please tune into my next episode for that topic.
Harry and Megan must watch this video.
All I've learned my whole life is that British have been the authoritarian scum of the Earth. No nuance. How does this type of information become so universally accepted?!
Seems that they failed at this concept with the Irish.. way into the 21st century..
I am especially impressed with the freedom England brought to India.
Thank you Dr Sowell. I am British and have known most of this, even though I stopped studying history at the age of 14, because I had an old fashioned education. However, although my three children all studied history until they were 16, they don’t know this as thoroughly as I do.
I have always been proud of these aspects of British history though I am properly conscious of some of the horrors of the same history.
Unfortunately the power of the King was diluted and spread to others. The lie of democracy continues today. When we, misbelieving vote for the next lot of tyrants to govern over us. In the mistaken belief they are working for us.

Do we upset the apple cart at this time in history? A belligerent Putin on one side. And a childish tantrum tossing Xi , on the other. An unprepared world blind to the military buildup of China. A China who in the past was rescued by America and its allies. Knows it is safe from harm. Yet is building war machines. And no one asks WHY?
–
((But relatively few will remember a historical fact that underpins the ceremony: China was the first country to enter what would become the Second World War, and it was the ally of the United States and the British empire from just after Pearl Harbor in 1941, to the Japanese surrender in 1945.))

All while the peoples of planet Earth tetter on the brink of obsolescence from AI. And freedom from the mundane by the same AI technology. The end of commercialism? Or the end of life for those no longer needed to drive the engine that bought us here?
–
So far so fast. All because of wealth, greed and education. Greed to strive ahead. Wealth to get educated and discover the unknown and make it known. To finally learn and develop the minds of all humanity to learn more.
_
Where will we be if everyone has a good education? And the freedom to experiment to search for information as yet unknown.
–
What will you discover?
–
Will we (you, I'm nearly dead 🙂) survive to discover it?

Cheers Bob.
Stuff like this is why i truly think great Britain is the greatest country in human history. though i do think in the modern day its USA, all time i'd put Britain as the nr 1. Too bad since we are taught british were evil in schools.
Stop listening to propaganda and lies from the bbc etc. Start reading history. We invented everything and the industrial revolution. Stop believing the idiots 😂😂😂 🇬🇧
Thank you Thomas Sowell
Stalin said ‘the Soviets provided the men, the US provided the material but it was the British who provided the time’
James II was the brother of Charles II, not his son. Though Charles II had numerous illegitimate children, he had no legitimate children with his wife, Catherine of Braganza. The main reason that James II was unpopular was not a penchant for absolutism, but because he had converted to Roman Catholicism. When a son was born to James II and his second wife (also Catholic), who would have been raised as a Catholic, the prospect of a Romanist dynasty, not merely one king, proved the breaking point. James' Protestant daughter, Mary, and her protestant husband William, Prince of Orange, (who was also James II's nephew), proved to be a much more attractive prospect to the British people.
Thank you Thomas Sowell.
I'm currently listening to all of these fascinating readings, one after the other. Brilliant man
I have no idea why this does not seem to be taught in schools these days it may well be because of the teachers being much more left and they just do not teach it. It’s such a shame that most of the young nowadays have no idea of British history this is shown by their attitudes to such peoples statues as Churchills and others they are almost being taught to hate our country I believe, whilst not having a clue about all the great things their country has done.
A lot of this I never knew, and that which I did was fragmented and not put into a solid framework. Excellent!!!
Thomas Sowell is The American Father Figure We Need And Deserve
It is absolutely Criminal that Thomas Sowells' Voice of Reason hasn't been amplified by the PedoMEDIA <~
Oh no!! STOP TELLING THE TRUTH!!
A true Brit from Glasgow, I'm so proud of our fight against slavery, if you havent already can you look at "the battle of Bamber Bridge"
Nit: James II was not the child of Charles Ii but his brother. Charles II left no legitimate successor
