I started reading about Dr. Sowell In my twenties because I loved history. I studied history, and I wondered, "How come I had to dig deep to even hear about this guy, to even know his name", more importantly, all the great accomplishments he's achieved. He's recognized by many as one of the leading American intellectuals for the last 40 years. Why has he been hidden away like a dirty secret. We all have to see through propaganda and search for the truth ourselves.
What I I think is ironic is the left has obviously gone to great lengths to minimize and hide and silence Dr. Sowell for decades because of his message, and now he's Boom, blowing up everywhere now And his message is finally getting out at the exact time they least wanted out. H*** and the only reason we & only because of the internet, because they were trying to hide his message. And as we'd learned, whenever you try to hide the truth, when it comes back, it comes back tenfold.
The channel for morons who are happy with hearing ONLY the positive bits. No mention of the following…
London Review of Books, 2019…
a) "He was ‘tremendous in his wrath’, Jefferson recalled after Washington’s death."
b) "Those who, he believed, were shirking their duties would be whipped."
c) "Most of the whipping was done by overseers, but Washington himself sometimes applied the lash."
d) "Why had Judge, certainly a privileged slave, run away? She learned that Martha Washington had promised her to her granddaughter as a wedding present. The Washingtons frequently referred to slaves as part of their family. But one does not typically give away a family member as a gift."
Wikipedia…
e) "He opposed the use of the lash in principle, but saw the practice as a necessary evil and sanctioned its occasional use."
f) "There are accounts of carpenters being whipped in 1758 when the overseer "could see a fault…"
g) "…and of a seamstress called Charlotte being whipped in 1793 by an overseer "
Encyclopedia Virginia…
h) "As a young man he acted as most of his enslaving peers did—making full use of enslaved labor, buying and selling enslaved people, and even raffling off a debtor’s enslaved laborers, including children, to recoup a loan."
i) "He approved harsh punishment (sometimes described by the euphemism “correction”) even for the seemingly trivial offense of being “impertinent.”
j) "In 1793, Washington retroactively approved a “very good Whiping” to a seamstress who apparently annoyed the plantation manager with her independence of mind." (see above)
He could have paid them
I have observed that Sowell seems to criticize figures like Obama; fair enough. Every man has actions that can be criticized or applauded. I have also observed that Sowell appears to be less critical of people like George Washington. My above observations are based on a limited knowledge of Sowell’s work. My question: Is Mr. Sowell ever critical of the “founding fathers”? If so, which ones and why? Presently or in the recent past, who, in his mind, has the best intentions, policies, and plans for America that would benefit all Americans; including the so called “minority” groups?
Blessings…
This sounds very “noble“ of the man…but why didn't he free them when he was living, strong and quite affluent? He had more than enough money to hire them and pay them for their services… but he didn't! It seems that he was trying to make sure he went to heaven and that his family remained prosperous! Sorry but it's all cap! He didn't do this as a noble act!
He was also offered to be King of America, and he turned it down! Honorable man.
This was very informal and I know some of this information. What's scarey is the comments. For some reason, George Washington eased the justification of slavery in your minds based on your comments. "He was a good slave owner" LoL LoL Repeat that 100 times or more until you realize how idiotic it sounds.
dang, he was a principled person who had to deal with a sticky issue of his time, and really did try and want what was ahead of his time.
So we are to celebrate him because he was a good master 🤷🏾♂️. If he freed his slaves when he died, I know that they couldn’t wait for George to kick the bucket. If you are locked up and there’s a worse prison somewhere else doesn’t mean that the one you are in is great. It just means that it’s the lesser of two evils. Those slaves hated George as they should. Nice try
Went to high school in the 2010’s, and heard nothing of George Washington in regards to slavery
This video is great, but it also misses a few things. Washington also:
• He publicly denounced the slave trade on moral grounds in the Fairfax Resolves.
• He tried to free his slaves before he ended up doing so in his will but failed due to family refusal (his wife's family owned many of the slaves) and his inability to raise the finances necessary.
• He expressed repugnance at owning slaves and declared it to be his “only unavoidable subject of regret.”
• He was determined to avoid the separation of slave families when trying to free them.
Morality over money. Sadly that is lacking from our leaders today.
All worried about a dead man's actions surrounding slaves but yet keen to buy "nike" branded attire, wear diamonds and gold and "I phone's"….
I knew some of that. Not all of it. I’m glad I know it now. I’m saving and sharing this.
People who judge the Father of our country harshly by the standards of today really need to hear this. They don’t like it when I tell them that if they had been born in his time and circumstances, they would probably have owned slaves. It usually shuts them down because they can’t honestly deny it. Now I can share this with them.
Bullcrap
In America, people were usually enslaved in large farms. Only about 1% of whites owned slaves.
But in Africa, even poor men owned slaves. Yes, black men often owned black slaves.
Indeed, black men are more likely to be descendants of slave owners than whites.

What he was saying was…
"I want to be the beacon of freedom for all…
However my upbringing and my parents past might tarnish the entire endeavour. Which as now a man. I know is wholely righteous."
And despite this… (Which now we would all say is obvious… But back then slavery existed all over the planet. The conquered were enslaved. And sold to slavers by their own enslaved… That was literally normal.) But this is the respect he gets in schools today…
Not to mention one amazing quote by Napoleon… "He'll never give up power." And 4 years later… George Washington willing stepped down from being President (essentially King).
Full on American hero!!!
Sorry USA haters…
Still a dirty slave owner
