He owned my ancestors, I found 8 of them listed on his will. White people stole my ancestors land that was bought for them.
John Randolph is considered on my great-grandmother's side my 10th great uncle . I use to hear my great-grandmother mentioning being related to the famous Randolph family .and being related to John Randolph ! My great-grandmother died in 1974 and use to shake her head that some of the Randolph's had some slaves and she hated the fact about her heritage . My great -grandmother was Ora Edith Randolph and married an Irishman and he was a Sullivan . Indeed John Randolph was quite a character and unusual man ! Thank you for the details of his life some I did know some I did not ! I did knew that he never had married !😊
John Randolph of Roanoke was quite a character. He used to bring his hunting dogs to Congress until they changed the rules to make him stop. He dressed in 18th Century British style long after it was out of fashion. Understanding his orations was like solving riddles. I imagine it took a few days for people began to figure out what he meant and who were his targets. Most of his orations/performances were off the cuff. He could cut to the bone. It's no wonder Henry Clay challenged him to a duel. Randolph refused to explain what he meant in the following part of his previous speech. "I was defeated, horse, foot, and dragoons–cut up–and clean broke down–by the coalition of Blifil and Black George–by the combination, unheard of till
then, of the Puritan and the black-leg."
Once you understand the context, you see it was brilliant and no why Clay demanded satisfaction via a duel. Randolph was comparing the relationship between John Q. Adams and Henry Clay by comparing them to characters in the popular novel "Tom Jones". Blifil was an hypocrite who tried to sugar coat his evil deeds, and Black George was a loyal servant but was prone to lie and steal. LMAO The Puritan was John Q Adams, and black-leg refers to a cheater or swindler and was Clay.
Randolph stopped his support for the Liberia colony because it was being used by politicians to virtue signal.
Huh.
This series is simply amazing! Great work!
