Understanding Marxism: Series
Everywhere Marxism has been tried, its left destruction and death in its wake. Yet Marxism lives. From environmentalism with its rejection of free markets to Critical Race Theory which sees white patriarchy as the source of all evil, you’ll find Marxism at its root. In this three-part series, C. Bradley Thomspon, Professor of Political Science at Clemson University, explores why Marxism has endured — even flourished — in the face of unremitting failure.
Author of “The Redneck Intellectual” on Substack, and America’s Revolutionary Mind: A Moral History of the American Revolution and the Declaration that Defined It.

Without hate there is nothing to hold Marxists together.
The desire to own thing is VERY BASIC human nature, that's the biggest obstacle to achieve Socialist Paradise Utopia or even Anarcho-Communist Paradise Utopia
Seems like all Socialist Wannabe today didn't even UNDERSTAND that simple thing
Desire to own thing, which that very basic of human nature, in the essence, no matter how little that is, always leads to the construction of Social Hierarchy and ended making Classes in a Society, again and again. No matter if it was Capitalism, Centrist Ideology like Pancasila & Christian Democracy in Europe, Soviet/Sino/Vietnamese/Khmer Rouge/Cuba/Laos Style Socialism-Communism (They never gave up the power to the mass in a society that leads to third phase of Socialist Revolution called Anarcho-Communism Phase/Classless Society Phase which no state power are needed anymore, which Karl Marx originally think), let alone Hitler-Hirohito-Mussolini's Fascism
Desire to own thing can only tamed and changed to be a morally superior human nature, in Free Market Capitalist Society. Look at China, even with limited Capitalist Society, they can lift 800 million people out of extreme poverty just in less than 40 years. United States rise as first economic superpower because of Free Market and Entrepreneurship mentality. Western Europe and Japan become prosperous after WW2. Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong become very very successful state after embracing FULL Free Market, Free Trade and Very Capitalistic Business Friendly Regulation
Why desired to own thing can only be tamed in Free Market Capitalist Society. Because you need to please your customer to be successful businessman. Otherwise you will go bankrupt instead of becoming billionaires like Elon Musk or Bernard Arnault. In Free Market Society, when zombie companies and zombie banks bailout is a very illegal thing, a billionaire with $500 billion or even $1 trillion wealth can go bankrupt if they treat their customer badly. Customer, all of ordinary people who want to consume something is the powerful king in a True Free Market Capitalist Society
Thank you Prager, now I am a Marxist
Is this satire???
I hardly heard any explanation for HOW it's bad, aside from "people I don't like support this, therefore it is bad!"
Well if you belive in a free market then you should be in favour of universal basic income, let's get everyone UBI then let's see how much a sewer cleaner charged to do their job "happily"
"Socialism is for arseholes"
Frank Zappa
Everything in this video is right but it’s way too hostile for the Marxists to handle and should have taken a different approach
Love seeing these Marxist zealots in the comments. This video is terrible though, but please still don’t fall for the Marxist cult and please do your own research on the subject and understand properly why these ideologies are bad.
Luke 22:25-26.
The problem with private property is that peoples labor is exploited in the construction of the property for significantly less compensation than what the house could provide for them and their family’s. Someone of greater economic means which is generally the result of generations of exploiting others for labor as the capitalist system literally requires for success doesn’t have to extol their own labor to own, and they build their wealth and livelihoods on the exploited labor of the builders who will not own, even though they built.
This land that could be used to provide for the commonwealth is then taken from the commonwealth and used to criminalize the poor by over codifying criminal statues that place private property over individual freedom that disproportionately discriminate against the poor which if we know wealth to be generational and caused by exploiting others inadvertently targets marginalized communities. Criminal statue literally states slavery is a reasonable punishment for crimes committed and this is why private property is theft and you sympathize with slavery if you support protecting private property.
The producer is mearly seen as an extension of the means of production, and under our current economic climate cannot reasonable acquire these means of production themselves. This is also theft, claiming sole ownership over the means of production is the theft of thousands of years of collective labor that went into devising and producing the means of production, to claim sole ownership of these means is theft.
Yes, if the person understands the previously mentioned concepts and strives to own private property then they are a terrible person.
The wage system is slavery in disguise, private property is theft. You cannot claim sole proprietorship over the product of the collective labor of others and not look like an asshole.
Also what’s up with that ugly ass lil hitler swoop in ur hair man.
Also, side note, the collectivism of socialisms main goal is to ensure people have equal pursuit of self interest. Collectivism’s aim is to reduce the waste of human labor and ensure people have equal opportunity to seek out the arts and sciences by providing those means to the public. There’s literally community workshops in Saint Petersburg that provide access to various machines and means of production for people to utilize in their free time and to pursue their own talents and ambitions. As it stands in our current economic system of capitalism, the poor are over worked and the rich are free to pursue the arts and sciences. You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about.
This is hilariously stupid.
😂 🤡
prager U made marxism cool, like my boy ben shapiro once said : "capitalism… is bad"
Wow so educational. Really educational now i know less of Marxism. Gratz prager u i am now an oil baron
Capitalism in America today has been ruined by all the Marxists/ communists that are STRONGLY influencing, schools, businesses, government. They are the reason capitalism isn’t working. The constant berating of capitalism in America today is really complaining about the beginnings of socialism!
If you guys think America is a mess then thank a leftist.
Tens of millions of people in Latin America have supported Marxism and proclaim their love, devotion and admiration of Fidel Castro. Despite a century of evidence about mass murder, they follow extreme leftist policies that create violence, corruption and destroy their economies. Then MANY come to the United States relentlessly talking BS and, astonishingly, they continue to talk nice about Cuba and bad-mouth the United States. Moreover, they praise the nation/system they voluntarily chose to leave. I have personally witnessed this many times over the last 25 years.
Marxism rules the world in 2023. It's called the NWO.
The desire to have things is called "wanting." Therefore it is desire that is the source of suffering.
So was Marx a Buddhist?
No. Marx was a heretic. Apparently both a Buddhist AND a Christian heretic.
Buddha said desire is the source of suffering. Some would correct that idea to say "inordinate desire" is the source of suffering.
But even that clarification is wrong. Not even excessive desire is the source of suffering.
The source of suffering is desiring something with no means to acquire it.
A situation that capitalism quite effectively SOLVES.
3:03 "Who cleans out the sewer… in capitalism, he freely chooses to take on this job. In a socialist paradise, coercion is almost always required. "
I want to break this down more because i think this is an interesting statement.
So first socialism, how marks explains it is the means of production is own by the people, this can be interpreted multiple ways so ill give you my interpretation.
This means that companies' farms etc would be owned by the people who are participating in the work rather than one person dictating, what, where, when, who, and how. Or the local city government when is the closest to the people and a perfect example of a decentralized government rather than the federal government, deciding these decisions elected by the local people.
So, back to the original statement. If in captilism people are willing to take on the responsibility, why wouldn't that same person willingly clean the sewers in a socialist system.
For example, in our country , I im confident that we couldn’t legally force anyone to do any jobs except prisoners.
And if people found lacking willing people, then they can also offer more and better benefits to the people doing those types of jobs as they deserve for helping keeping our infustrusture functioning. People are willing to help and take care of their community's if its a healthy local culture.
I would say that capitalism that person is more like to be coercion.
Let me give my personal life example.
Im a black american. When i was born, my mother, who i lived with, didn't own a house, and all the property around me is already owned. So as i rise into adult working life, there were careers that i wanted to get into, but i didn't have the education or experience for those jobs. The schooling is very expensive, so if i want this career, i have to get educated, so i need to get a job. So i have to do another job that im not necessarily interested in "willingly." Why because money is survival, i need to buy food because since all land is already owned there is no food i can just go out in collect, water, shelter, and in our modern-day society internet and phone. I did those jobs. However, i feel coerced to do those jobs why, because other jobs i either dont have the education, experience, or simply the position are already filled.
So i have to take these other jobs i dont want to do "willingly" why because i dont want to be homeless, why because i need to eat, why because i need to be educated. If you use my "needs" to make me do a job "willingly" that is coercion.
Sorry for my tangent i just wrote what came to mind, i dont believe this man understands how the lower classes of capitalism functions, or is trying to convince me that our government will immediately turn authoritarian if we switch to a socialist economy.
Why does this guy look like the nazi from the new Indiana jones movie
0:24 C’mon guys. How can anyone seriously fall for this shit. This is the most blatant example of smooth brain “Marx bad. Everything me no like because of Marx.” 😂
It's really sad how US-american workers have nowadays forgotten their passed glorious fight againts capitalism.
Marx understanding of economics by large surpassed that of most economists, especially those of the neoclassic school
This is a conflation of different ideas culled together to call it Marxism. It would be nice if you gave one or two direct quotes from Marx's writings. It's kind of what is being done today with the word "fascist". It has lost all meaning. It's simply something you call people you don't agree with. I didn't say that, it's in an essay by George Orwell which he wrote during WWII..
Marxism is also called Postmodernism, Multiculturalism, Feminism, Environmentalism, or Critical Race Theory. So there is no difference among all these topics? Wondering if Stalin, Mao or Pol Pot ever mentioned the name of Marx.
Marxism is so deeply depressing.
Lol, literally so wrong. If you believe this shit id hate to break it to you, but you are being brainwashed by a company funded by billionaires destroying our planet.
I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but I don't feel that Marx was entirely right nor entirely wrong. He had some decent ideas that I can get behind. Perhaps if he had lived longer his ideas would have evolved into a workable solution. Nothing in this world is all good or all bad. Even capitalism has some good and I hate capitalism. 😂
Marxism is counter to human nature, it can never work.
tell me you never read Marx, without telling me you never read Marx
Trotsky, Lenin, Stalin, and other Marxists are all atheists, but still they all had one common religion – Communism! And this "common God" allowed them to kill and put to labor camps millions of innocent people, destroy art, architecture, and other human achievements.
I lived in the Soviets Union for the first 20 years of my life back in the 1960's and 1970's.
I was one of the lucky ones to be able to escape to the US.
Communism killed 100 people.
That isn't including all of the people from the wars it started.
Marx was perhaps the devil incarnate.
I love coming here to see the stupidest video on YouTube. Makes me feel good about myself 🥰
How many deaths under capitalism?
Marx and marxists=perpetual victims. Anyone who actually knows about Marx knows he was a loser.
Marxist cannot answer these questions, mapped out: Where does love exist in Socialism? Where does Freedom exist in Socialism? Where does innovation exist in Socialism? Where does happiness exist for all in Socialism? Who does the Hard jobs, and jobs No-one wants to do?
2:00 you're just going to leave this here and not explain capitalism creates all these things???
Yeh Murica baby freedom and liberation lessss gooo
You're unironically a teacher in a university? This is embarrassing dude, can't even be bother to read the theory before talking about it
A lot of this is inaccurate information.
There will always be those who say that they read his book and suggest that people got him wrong. To them, I have one question. How aware are you of your own resentment?
How could anyone be a Marxist when he was wrong about almost everything including where the proletarian revolution would begin, and also his ideas have led to the deaths of around 100m people.
Can’t we see that Marxism doesn’t work?
He argued for abolishing the family for Pete sake.
