Wokeism– the idea that America is a systemically racist country which your identity is defined by your race, your gender, and your sexual preference– is no longer about challenging the system.
Wokeism is the system..
Blame the radical academics.
Blame the college administrators.
Blame the woke graduates.
These aren’t the individuals who took wokeism mainstream.
That dubious difference comes from an unexpected source: Big Business.
That’s right– the largest companies in America, the standard-bearers of American industrialism– have actually injected this infection into the arteries of commerce.
Our story begins in 2008, following the home mortgage crisis that resulted in the near-collapse of the whole banking system. Bankers got paid a lot of money when times were great, but got a bailout from taxpayers when times spoiled. No wonder Americans were hesitant of capitalism, and for excellent reason, because it was actually simply crony industrialism.
The old Left wanted to penalize the banks in the normal method– take their money and rearrange it to “the bad.” But the brand-new Woke Left added a new twist. The genuine problem, they said, wasn’t simply hardship or economic oppression. It was a 300-year history of white patriarchy.
Ironically, this originality (you know it as Critical Race Theory) provided Wall Street with a way out of their PR catastrophe– a method to go from being the bad guys to– poof!– ending up being the heros.
All they needed to do was confess that their eyes had been opened. To put it simply, they “woke” up.
You desire us to fix worldwide warming? No problem. You desire us to get on board with the transgender motion? Sure, we’ll do that too. Resolve systemic racism? Sounds excellent, as long as you don’t discuss systemic financial danger.
They were pleased to publish a black square on their corporate Instagram. As long as the banks stated the ideal things, they would be left in peace to make their billions.
And, abracadabra, like a bunny out of a hat, Woke Inc. was born..
Things went quite efficiently, up until the 2016 election. The man who won wasn’t expected to win. And this time, the blame fell not so much on Wall Street, however on Silicon Valley..
They had Wall Street’s playbook, and they followed it to a T. The brand-new bad guys (Big Tech) could end up being the good guys just like the banks, as long as they made certain the next election went the “best way”; that is, the way the brand-new Left desired it to go.
In exchange, Big Tech would get to keep its monopoly power intact.
And that’s the unknown story of how modern-day Big Tech censorship was born. The recently ascendant Left was able to entrust its dirty work to private companies to do through the back door what it could refrain from doing through the front door under the Constitution– specifically, to censor secured political speech.
Came Covid and the death of George Floyd.
Woke Inc. became the Woke Industrial Complex.
Now it’s not just Wall Street and Silicon Valley playing the game, but almost all of business America as we know it.
Coca-Cola trains its employees “how to be less white” and concerns public statements about voting laws that make it sound more like a super-PAC than a soft drink producer. Pay no attention that its beverages are a significant factor to the obesity epidemic. Especially in the black neighborhood.
Nike condemns “systemic racism” in the United States and contributes tens of millions of dollars to Black Lives Matter while it still counts on slave labor in Asia to make $200 tennis shoes that they offer to black kids in the central city who can’t afford to purchase books for school.
