Where Do You Want to Live: Red State or Blue State?
We’re supposed to be the United States of America. But in many ways, we’re now divided into two very different nations: red states and blue states. Which ones are succeeding? Which ones are failing? And why? To answer these questions, economist Stephen Moore compares them side-by-side.

We’re supposed to be the United States of America. But in many ways, we’re now divided into two very different nations.
There is red state America.
And there is blue state America.
The red states favor conservative, small government, free market policies: low taxes, light regulation, tough-on-crime policing, and worker freedom. Think Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Arizona, and Utah.
The blue states favor a liberal/left, big government approach: high taxes, heavy regulations, high minimum wages, and mandatory union membership. Think New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Illinois, Oregon, and, of course, California.
Progressives like to argue that their big-government, high tax policies are economically superior and thus better for the poor, minorities and working-class Americans than those of red states. Conservative policies, progressives contend, are culturally backward, and tilted to benefit the rich.
Let’s test this thesis by comparing three of the largest red states: Florida, Texas, and Tennessee with three of the largest blue states: California, New York, and Illinois.
If progressive policies really work, then Americans should be rushing to get into the blue states.
But just the opposite is happening.
Americans are packing up their U-Hauls and heading to the red states. According to the New York Times, in August 2020, so many people wanted to leave New York City that moving companies were turning away business. They just couldn’t handle the demand.
This exodus may be accelerating, but it’s not new.
Over the last decade the three big blue states each lost an average of one million people to other states, while the three big red states gained almost a million from other states.
Makes perfect sense. Americans like freedom. Small government means more freedom.
And freedom means opportunity.
Let’s say you’re looking for a job. Over the last decade, Florida, Texas and Tennessee have gained twice as many jobs as the progressive states.
Not only that, but your money goes further in red states. According to a 2019 Tax Foundation study, your $100 stretches to $111 in purchasing power in Tennessee, while in New Jersey it shrinks to $89.
If you’re a big corporation or a small company looking for a business-friendly environment, affordable housing or maybe just a better quality of life, where are you going to go?
The tough decision is not choosing a red state or a blue state. The tough decision is which red state to move to.
Progressives like to say that this isn’t about economics, it’s about weather. The red states tend to be in the South and southwest where the weather is warmer.
But that doesn’t explain why so many people are leaving California which has the best weather in the country.
So, what does explain the migration from blue states?
Start with taxes. The two most populous blue states — California and New York — have the highest tax rates in America, while the two most populous red states — Texas and Florida — have no income tax at all.
When taxes get too high, people move to where taxes are lower. The problem for the high-tax states is that these people take their money, their ambition, and their employees with them.
Then, there is crime.
Do blue cities do better than red cities?
The answer, of course, is no. Of the twenty cities with the highest murder rates, 18 are run by left-leaning Democrats — and for the most part, have been for decades. And these cities aren’t getting safer; they’re getting more dangerous.
A good chunk of Minneapolis was burned to the ground as a result of riots, following the death of George Floyd.

AZ and GA and several others states are not red states any more. They are the so-called swing states now.
A fascinating fact is that the growing prosperity of the Red State has attracted numerous immigrants from the Blue State, leading to the increasingly bluish hue of those thriving Red States, such as Texas becoming progressively more blue.
I thought I was moving to a red state(Arizona) but thanks to fraud I’m in a purple state now.
They take their voting policies with them…. just look at what is happening in Texas
Blue states because red states fail like Kansas..Miss.Alabama.red states are embarrassing…nice propaganda…
How about the Republican party in these blue states try harder to show these FACTS to the voters and turn them into RED STATES!!!
Well, since the blue states support all the red states, maybe we'd be better off without the red states.
BUT, the red state has a good healthcare, good education, good PUBLIC transportation and an advanced enviromental law.
wow …. this didnt come off as biased and romanticizing conservative ideas. Low regulation sounds great until we ask folks if thats what they want for people buying a gun. Where high regulation must include a waiting period and a background check before they can purchase that firearm. This video's over simplification and sesame street feel should make republicans feel great. ….. The talk about the riots in cities over racial protests seems to ignore the rural area's continuing KKK grip …. heck 3 Texas DOC employees were arrested in the last 5 yrs plotting to kill a black man. So …. to sum it up …. if you think anyone should have as many guns as they want on demand, but a woman can't have an abortion while the "baby" still has a tail and lacks a brain …. then yes You would love a red state. If cross burning is part of your family gatherings to welcome the new neighbors then … red state it folks.
You can’t claim to love “small government” and then be in favor of “tough on crime policing.” That makes no sense. They are contradictory positions. Pick one! Oh and by the way, it’s blue states like mine (NY) that have to step in and bail red states out all the time. You’re welcome.
I have to get out of america NEOWWWW😂😂😤
All lies, how all these American sheep all believe this crap is beyond me:
Blue states:
avg. homicide rate( per 100,000): 4.67
avg. GDP per capita: $85,707
avg. life expectancy: 77.7
Red states:
avg. homicide rate( per 100,000): 5.07
avg. GDP per capita: $61,739
avg. life expectancy: 75.2
So, basically a video of bending facts and lying. Also, since 2010 California population as increased about 5%, another lie, using just the data from last year, forgetting all the others when population increased. How these people sleep at night I don't know.
where do i want to live? i moved from california to idaho
I went back to college after my stint in the Army, which was in late 80s, and I had a professor who had moved from Chico St. In Cali to Sam Houston St. In Texas. He'd told us that he was looking to move out of Cali and saw the posting for SHSU. He laughed at the pay he said 😅 and then started to add up the cost of living, no income tax, etc. Pay was less than half of what it was at Chico St. But he stated he had more disposable income at the end of the day.
There are no blue states. Only states that are unjustly controlled by blue cities that impose their will over a rural minority.
Yes, red states are better. The challenge is people fleeing blue states into red states, without reflecting on how their own unrealistic ideological indulgences, and irresponsible voting, created the problems they are fleeing. So how do we save the red states?
bruh this ain't no unbaised source wtf
God bless Texas.
I would move to Utah if I was American. A small town near St. George.
As a Hawaiian, I wish my state would go back to being red. It has been run by Demos since 1950s. Before that it was a red state. No wonder Hawai‘i now has the highest rates of homelessness and highest cost of living in the COUNTRY. It has one of the largest wealth inequalities, as we, the Native Hawaiians, are getting poorer and poorer! Republicans need to take Hawai‘i back! We are the minority on our own land, thanks to the Blue D.
We don't even have red states. We have blue big cities and red small towns. Both Texas and California suffer from that problem. I'd love for there to be just one actually red state.
I would take most blue states than most red states. Mainly due to lifestyle
hahaha it is so funny, because every time I want to invest… I look for Republican States, as an example, I had the opportunity to purchase a house in NYS, the house was inside my budget and I didn't want it as it is a blue state… so, I bought two lots in Florida without any construction… and, I am happy with that! Im glad to invest where I have more freedom, more safety, more opportunities, and peace itself!
California conservatives are NOT the same as Texas conservatives. Just a pro tip, if you are moving to a red state, don't bring your politics with you.
idk, but if i were a business, id go to the lowest income tax state i could find
Democrats don't "mean well". They shroud their evil intentions with deceptive euphemisms like "Gender Affirming Healthcare". Which actually means Gender Denying Genital Mutilation and Psychological Abuse"
There is no such thing as mandatory union membership
I had to turn it off when he said "worker freedom" in red states, lost all credibility
I rather live In Red Louisiana than Blue Delaware .
I'm stuck in Blue Delaware . AND I HATE IT . DEMOCRATS CANT RUN SHIT .
Moving from nyc to a red state was the best decision I’ve ever made. Nyc used to be the big apple. Now it’s just the rotten apple
Red state
Yeah right😂. Because Mississippi and Alabama are paradises. (oh I forgot people there look like there living in a third world country) California is full of homeless and high prices but Mississippi looks like I traveled back in time because it's so poor
Hey @pragerU you keep making videos like this just summing up what we all have known. Thank you. Finally an institution who shares the good stuff not the "woke stuff."
"The Bourbons maintained their power by dividing the poor and working classes along racial lines so that they would not unify for their mutual betterment by raising taxes on the wealthy, improving schools and making government responsive to the needs of the masses rather than protecting the wealth and position of the Bourbons.
The Southern states have long followed what are now doctrinaire Republican policies: minuscule taxes, no unions, aggressive pro-business policies, privatized public services and strong police forces that kept minorities in their place. Yet the South is and always has been our poorest region and shows no sign of converging with the Northeast, which has long followed progressive policies opposite those in the South and been the wealthiest region as well." Bruce Bartlett, 2016.
Texas!
well, of course i would rather live in a red state than a blue state. however, it is not so simple. for one thing, i need my current job here on the Left Coast, plus this is where i grew up and so there is the sentimental value plus i know people here…..and of course then there is the unbeatable weather here in Southern California. but yes, on a purely political level, any sane human being would rather live in a Red State
Red state for me, for sure
This is so true for 30 years I lived in Maryland. For the last eight years, I’ve lived in Florida. There is a lot more freedom in Florida than Maryland. There is a lot less crime in Florida than Maryland. And I am constantly constantly seeing license plates from blue states.
The thing I don’t understand is people move from a blue state to a red state, but still vote the same way.
Red state wins. God bless America god bless conservatives god bless the Republican Party!!!
lies
Red states are cheaper to live in, but they have much more poverty, lower wages, higher working hours, less vacation time, worse air quality, worse education, higher crime rates, higher incarceration rates, worse water quality, lower high school graduation rates, higher obesity rates, lower life expectancy, just bad everything in general. People are only moving to red states now because they're cheaper to live in than, say, California or Oregon. Shithouse politicians and their reckless spending on useless shit have kept the US economy inflating ever since the eighties and only now is it getting too expensive to handle. But sure, South Carolina has some nice people, I guess…? Less nice, easygoing, educated and healthy people than its cousin up north, but I guess there are some nice people.
Red southern states also have the highest poverty rate, homicide rate, lower life expectancy, lower levels of education, worse infrastructure, etc. I mean, Mississipi and Louisiana practically rank bottom of every list imaginable, but I guess that does not fit the agenda
1:56 disingenuous. They're leaving because real estate is very expensive. It's expensive because a lot of people have moved into those states. It's the tragedy of being successful, you attract people, a lot of people. People bring demand and the rest is econ 101. Pricey real estate is happening in Florida. You'll see exodus there really soon.
Most government dependant States are red states. Blue states are majority donor states. Red states are majority takers.
Yeah Prager U definitely isn’t biased 😭
