Many people think of happiness as essentially a self-centered concern: “I want to enjoy– and I wish to be happy for me.”
I ‘d like to recommend that in reality joy is far, much more than a self-centered desire. In reality, it is an ethical commitment.
I understand that most people have actually never thought of joy in this way. Neither did I, to inform the truth, for much of my life. I thought that joy, and particularly the pursuit of happiness, was all about oneself.
It isn’t.
Whether or not you’re happy, and most significantly, whether or not you act delighted is about selflessness, not selfishness– since it is about how we affect others’ lives.
And that’s what makes it an ethical concern. Ask anyone who was raised by an unhappy moms and dad whether or not joy is a moral problem, and I assure you the response will be “yes”.
It is no fun being raised by a dissatisfied parent, or being wed to a dissatisfied person, or being the parent of an unhappy child, or working with an unhappy co-worker.
Our joy impacts others– profoundly. That’s why happiness is a moral commitment. We are morally obliged to at least serve as pleased as possible– even if we don’t rejoice. Since it is how we act that affects others– not how we feel, individuals can’t be guided by feelings.
An excellent analogy to bad moods is bad breath. Why do we brush our teeth numerous times every day? It’s not just because of hygiene, it’s since we wish to provide great breath to anybody who we are available in contact with.
Well, the very same thing is true for our moods. A tiff ought to be concerned exactly as we regard halitosis. Why are you causing it on me? Or, why am I causing it on you? It’s simply not. That’s why one should venture as much as possible, to act as pleased as possible, as frequently as possible.
And almost anybody can do this. No matter how unhappy you might feel at any given minute, you can– and have to– make a decision on how to act. We may not be complimentary to manage whether we feel sad or happy, but we are complimentary to control whether or not we provide a happy countenance to others.
