All over the world, nationalism is winning elections. Many see this nationalist revival as the great threat of our time, fearing that nationalism will take us back to a more primitive and racist past.
It wasn’t long ago that great political figures such as Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt, David Ben-Gurion and Mahatma Gandhi, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher acknowledged what I call the virtue of nationalism.
What is this virtue?
A nationalist thinks that the world is governed best when countries are complimentary to chart their own independent course, cultivating their custom-mades and pursuing their interests without disturbance. Nationalism is not about bigotry.
Countries can a pursue a range of various policies in diplomacy and trade. Nationalism is the reverse of imperialism– or globalism or transnationalism– which are all names for the effort to bring peace and success to the world by joining humankind under a single political authority.
The conflict in between globalists and nationalists, then, is over whether we should want a world of great deals of independent nations– or to be one combined super-state, like the notified “Federation” of the Star Trek films. A case can be produced both sides of the argument. For the last 30 years– actually, considered that the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and completion of the Soviet Union– the “one world” side has in fact been dominant.
Today, this is changing. Perhaps not among elites, nevertheless amongst normal residents– or, as they are understood in America, “the deplorables.” It ends up that a lot of people still believe wonderful borders make excellent next-door neighbors.
It’s hardly unexpected that people want to preserve the way of living they and their forefathers established over centuries, the way of life they believe is finest. It’s mankind.
