Why You Should Love Fossil Fuel|5 Minute Video

Perhaps we need to instead reflect on how human progress, even utilize of fossil fuels, has actually made our environment cleaner and healthier. Alex Epstein of the Center for Industrial Progress discusses.

Every year on Earth Day, we’re expected to reflect on all the ways we’ve made the planet even worse. What if we attempt something various? What if we review all the ways we’ve made the planet better?
Try this thought experiment:
Imagine that we transported someone from three a century earlier, at the extremely start of the Industrial Revolution, to today’s world. What would he think of our environment? Without concern, his response would be one of disbelief; not that we had actually destroyed his beautiful, natural world, however that such a clean, healthy environment was possible.
” The air is so tidy,” our time tourist may say. “Where I originate from, we’re inhaling smoke all the time from the fire we require to burn in our furnaces and stoves.”
” And the water. All over I go, the water tastes so fresh, and it’s all safe to drink. On my farm, we get our water from a brook we show animals, and my kids are constantly getting ill.”
” And then the weather condition. I indicate, the weather isn’t that much different, but you’re a lot safer in it; you can move a knob and make it cool when it’s hot, and warm when it’s cold.”
” And what happened to all the illness? In my time, we had pests everywhere providing us illness– my next-door neighbor’s child died of malaria– and you don’t seem to have any of that here. What’s your secret?”
I ‘d tell him that the trick was energy, particularly energy derived from fossil fuels– oil, coal and natural gas. These fuels power makers that allow us to transform our naturally dangerous environment into a far much healthier environment.
As our time tourist kept in mind, 300 years ago humans spent a lot of time breathing polluted air from indoor fires. As unhealthy as it was, it was worth the warmth. We’ve been able to conquer all these ecological hazards. We’ve drained swamps, reclaimed land, cleared forests, constructed roads, constructed glass and steel skyscrapers. We’ve irrigated deserts, developed pesticides and fertilizers, linked oceans– all of it in humanity’s extremely effective effort to develop a more secure, cleaner, more habitable world. And we did the majority of this using makers running on cheap, numerous, trustworthy energy from fossil fuels.
To be sure, using that energy has carried dangers and developed negative spin-offs. Thanks to technology, we get better and much better at lessening and reducing the effects of those threats. Once smog city, Los Angeles was. Now its air is cleaner than it’s been in decades. When obstructed with sewage; now it’s tidy, London’s Thames River was.

I ‘d inform him that the secret was energy, particularly energy obtained from fossil fuels– oil, coal and natural gas. These fuels power devices that permit us to change our naturally harmful environment into a far much healthier environment. And we did many of this utilizing machines running on cheap, plentiful, reliable energy from fossil fuels.
