Many people believed that the election of a black President would advance America to a brand-new period of racial consistency.
That belief showed to be mistaken. In retrospect it was naive to believe that a single event– even the election of a black president– would remove a stain so deeply deep-rooted in our culture. The debate about how much racism there remains in America– and specifically the variation between the races– is just as fierce as ever. That’s okay with me. Discrimination still exists. Let’s deal with it honestly and honestly. That’s really hard to do.
One factor, I’ve discovered, is that numerous individuals feel that they have to treat blacks with kid gloves. They believe this is worthy … enlightened … progressive.
In an anthropology class, my professor chose to go over the shooting of Michael Brown, a black teenager, by a white cops officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Before I tell you what took place, I require to inform you something about this teacher. More importantly, she took a non-PC method to the class, which I found revitalizing.
When the subject of Ferguson came up, all this neutrality went out the window. When a schoolmate said, following a debate over the information of the case, that the facts “ultimately don’t matter,” my teacher concurred.
For that reason, riots that followed the grand jury decision not to arraign the officer were the genuine reactions of people who “just couldn’t take it any longer.” And that’s when I understood that what I was really hearing was not an expression of empathy and understanding, however something else.
Rioting and looting are appropriate forms of habits? Since the rioters and looters have no other choices? In complimentary, democratic America, you have no other choices?
But we– the informed ones– are all set with a pre-packaged list of excuses when blacks riot and loot. Worse, when it comes to judging black behavior, even truths don’t matter. All that matters is the skin color of the teen and the skin color of the police.
If a black police eliminates a black kid, the realities matter. If a black police officer kills a white kid, the realities matter. And if a white police kills a black kid, the realities matters.
