You’re not kidding! I’ve heard a handful of verses used in such a way. Not only “where two or three are gathered..”, but also the one that talks about being “..snared by the words of your mouth.”
Or, “..by his stripes we are healed..”.
My family is largely charismatic Pentecostal so you can imagine the push back I get when I attempt to open the scripture up and explain to them how the above named scriptures don’t apply to the situation in question.
A number before a verse does not mean that what follows is a doctrine.. Many contexts are ruined by stopping at the next number, being considered a verse of its own meaning. Flow of thought is the standard as a correct passage of scripture in the 66 Books of the Bible, written at different times by some 44 authors many of whom did not know the other authors.
"Lots of people in leadership have ego problems" And there's the problem!
The church has drifted from having 'ministers': servants' to 'leaders' like we are a business. Having 'leaders' automatically focuses on the one person, or the 'leadership' team (rather than the service team) and can tend to discourage others from shouldering the responsibilities of their own gifts and calling.
We have, yet again, followed the world as though it supersedes scripture, rather than challenge it. Indeed one of the most cogent challenges of 'leadership' even in business is Henry Mintzberg who a few years ago issued a plea for 'more communityship' and less 'leadership'. How sad that the church did not bring this thinking to the world, but 'the world' (and I don't mean to impugn Mintzberg, nor do I have any information about his personal beliefs) had to take the lead.
We need to be far more confident in the ethos of church organization reflected in the scriptures, rather than the hubristic impulses of Wall Street or Washington.

As soon as I hear a scripture being quoted, especially in a sermon in church, I also read what came before and what came after to make sure it's being properly used. We need to be proactive!!
I think it’s fair to say that (2 chronicles 7:14)
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.) And John 3:16 are the 2 scriptures taken out of context the most.
“A verse used out of context is no longer God’s word. If it’s not being used as God intended, it is not. God’s. Word.” THIS!!!!!
My apologies, these misinterprets or misgquotes should never be let go, regardless of how weary it becomes, the truth of God's word needs to be correct, least those who are not as versed in scripture start believing what they are hearing and move that falsehood forward to someone else. There must be a way to "tacticfully" make the corrections to keep the scripture true to God's purposes????
