Summer season– marvelous summer season!
Time to dig in the sand, gulp from the tube, play at the park, and leap with happiness! Unless you’re a kid– in which case, discover yourself a comfortable couch in a dark, quiet room and settle in.
This is the season your moms and dads are bombarded with the sort of cautions formerly associated with incoming torpedoes.
The fundamental message: Don’t have a good time– it’s too hazardous.
” Remember when digging in the sand at the beach was a fun activity for kids?” asks the site KidsTravelDoc. “Sorry. No more. Based upon current findings, just with great deals of do’s and do n’ts is romping in the sand a healthy activity.”
The blog site’s author, Karl Neumann of the American Academy of Pediatrics, sets out his own do n’ts: “Studies show that kids playing in the sand are most likely to become ill than children simply walking on it. And the threat of health problem increases with digging in the sand, being ‘buried’ in it, and digging in damp sand.”
Got it. Keep your kids on dry sand. No, wait–” Dry sand provides problems, too.” Dr. Neumann alerts: “Discourage kids from lying straight on the sand.”
Have kids use lightweight, ventilated, hard-soled footwear that covers the toes. This helps prevent stubbed toes, lacerations, leak injuries, and burns from hot sand.
Why take your kids to the beach at all? Children should also be in steel-toed work boots.
However even that isn’t enough. Simply keeping the kids in the house doesn’t guarantee they’re safe either, specifically if they make it into the yard. Parents Magazine cautions that “bees are brought in to flowers, so do not put fragrances or floral-patterned clothing on kids.” Surely, you’ve seen swarms of bees chasing children in floral prints.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that if your moppets still insist on playing outside, the little daredevils at least should “limit sun exposure during peak intensity hours– in between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.” That should not put a crimp in anybody’s day, should it?
