When did sports get so political? When did ESPN end up being MSNBC? When did Colin Kaepernick become Mahatma Gandhi?
I love sports. I always have. Growing up, I played every sport I could. Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson posters decorated the walls of my bedroom. Sports stays my passion, and for two decades has actually been my profession. I enjoy that sports permits us a break from day-to-day worries, to lose ourselves in the game– where the rules are clear, where talent rules supreme, and surprise is always possible.
And I like sports not only for my own self-centered reasons, however for what it does for the country. Sure, a motion picture may be terrific, but you do not see Democrats and Republicans hugging and high-fiving after viewing Tropic Thunder.
I’m refrained from doing. Sports are a living civics lesson. Consider it. Every team represents its community– a city, a college, a high school. It is, after all, the New York Yankees. The gamer who wears the team uniform represents that community.
Now, let’s take it one step further: a soldier, likewise in uniform, represents his nation. He is a member, in result, of the country’s group. The anthem and the flag are signs of that team. That’s why every expert sports occasion in America starts with the nationwide anthem. But for the nation when you stand for the anthem you are not just cheering for the home team. Simply put, we start every sports contest unified. Then, obviously, it’s game on. The lesson has been taught. Regrettably, the unifying power of sports is being trashed.
The worst culprits are, ironically, the very individuals who cover sports in the first place– the sports media. A great location to begin is with four letters: ESPN. 24/7 sports news and highlights– every fan’s dream.
That’s when ESPN recognized that it was losing its influence. A brand-new approach: sports blended with politics.
ESPN changed ratings bonus offers with variety perks; provided “woke” experts like Jemele Hill, Max Kellerman, and Bomani Jones their own programs; and an anti-American former backup quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, more airtime than he got playing time. And because ESPN leads the field, much of the sports media followed suit.
The result? When you go to the sports area of USA Today or Yahoo or perhaps Sports Illustrated, you’re as most likely to read about players’ thoughts on the president as you are about their thoughts on the video game.
