Is there such a thing as fact?

Or is everything, consisting of reality, a statement of personal opinion or preference? Simply put, is truth relative?

For our functions here, let’s put aside the science angle. Yes, you can rest on a couch and not seem moving, but considering that the earth, at the equator, is rotating at 1100 miles per hour, you are, from that perspective, moving– and really quick. I’m not discussing that kind of relative.

Let’s restrict ourselves to the more daily questions of reality. Like, does it exist?

When, the answer to this question was obvious– generally restricted to late-night conversations in college dormitory. No longer.
Truth is going through a tough time.

A white woman feels black and represents herself to be so. She feels black, and so she is black.

Because that’s how he feels, a 69 year-old man in the Netherlands petitions the court to lawfully alter his age to 49.

And, of course, seemingly daily, men (and increasingly more kids), with all the chromosomes and body parts that make them distinctly male, state themselves to be female; and females (and increasingly more ladies) also state themselves to be male. They feel they are one sex or the other; for that reason, they are that sex.

And we need to accept that, no matter what the truth is.

In a viral video, a 5-foot, 9-inch American Caucasian male asks students at the University of Washington to acknowledge that he’s Chinese, or six-foot-five, or a female. Some hesitate, however nobody will inform him what he’s saying is not true– that he’s not what he says he is. That would be “suggest”– and “intolerant.”.

This “real for you, however not for me” relativism is perturbing since it needs the acceptance of obvious contradictions, denial of truth, and common sense. Rather than adjusting our lives to the reality, the reality has to change itself to us.

It’s very tough to live this method, not to discuss it being extremely impractical. We count on mind-independent axioms in order to believe clearly, to navigate life. Otherwise, we quickly get lost.

There need to be some things that just are– things that are true. In this manner points North for everybody, no matter what anyone occurs to choose or genuinely think.
