Yes the world has never been a level playing field, read about geopolitics and this is explained.
Geography is not just maps and names of countries…it is all encompassing and indeed addresses the disproportionate "disbursion" of natural resources and the material and technological developments of those resources.
Raw materials leave countries at low cost and return as refined and manufactured goods at high prices. Take sugar cane and its byproducts as well as tamarinds from Barbados. The come back as Tate and Lyle icing and castor sugar and Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce…elsewhere precious metals and minerals return as cell phones and smart TVs…
The media for years has shown the rural and rustic, pastoral aspects of Africa where MATERIAL wealth is not generally rated as important in the so called civilized world…
Funny how the US dollar bill is made from ecofriendly, inexpensive, recycled material, yet is exchanged at rates way higher than other currencies whose printed money cost more to make…
So while mainstream media shows starving, potbellied African children with flies in their nostrils, at the brink of starvation and malnutrition, farmers elsewhere are ploughing (plowing for you other spellers) under tonnes of good food because it is not worth selling. Grain silos are stockpiled awaiting best market prices…
History is another aspect of economic inequality. While heaping praise upon European civilization, Africa and elsewhere provided education and forms of government way before Europe did.
While Britons were living in caves and painting their faces blue, the University of Alexandria in Egypt was already established…
Mind you, I saw a teenaged boy who could freehandedly not only draw world maps, but he could name each country and their capitals (even though like most people he could not pronounce Kiribati).
Yugoslavia is fractured
So is Czechoslovakia and CCCP(I prefer the FIFA World Cup shirt name vs USSR).
Ceylon is Sri Lanka
Siam Thailand
Formosa Taiwan
Burma Myanmar
Rhodesia Zimbabwe…
I recently saw Swaziland is now Eswatini…
However, do not tell me that because Israel and Egypt play in the UCL that they no longer are in North Africa…
Again…how values are imposed and deals are brokered, along with renaming and redifining boundaries of countries, is part of Geography…
Whether contiguous or an archipelago we can see the impact of alliances and the vestiges of colonialism on the prosperity of nations globally.
A lot has been packed into this 6 or so minutes…
Ah well, what do I know?
How in the hell is this man 91yrs old? Aged flawlessly
The Australia Aboriginal argument has more of a Paradoxical situation. He mentions the rivers in western Europe go to open Ocean and Eastern Europe go to lakes. Australia is the only inhabited continent on Earth that is 360° access to open ocean that is not harsh like the Artic. Why did the Aboriginals never benefit from this unique advantage?
My first experience with Dr sowell the man's a genius
Another tome about how blacks are not responsible for literally doing nothing to advance the cause of mankind in all of history.
If we had more Educators like Dr. Thomas Sowell. Parents wouldn’t have to worry about someone Transgenderlysing and Indoctrinating our Children. All day long Yahoo
Really interesting.
These are things that I rarely ponder, and I suspect the same for many others.
From memory Montesquieu started reflections on the relations of weather and geography to politics and economics way back in the 18th century.
I used to think Geography was a useless subject. It was not until I listened to Thomas Sowell that I realized how integral learning and understanding it actually is. I listened to the segment on him describing the geography of Africa and it was like someone took a grenade and shoved it in my head because my mind blew up. The importance of geography on economic development is so painfully obvious yet so overlooked. This should be taught in school.
People in hot countries are slackers. All people in lower-temperature countries tend to believe this. Heat encourages naps.
I always wanted to see a simulation software that would take into account geography + resources to predict the spread any prosperity of nations.
It would be interesting to see how the world would be different today given some minor geographical changes, or with another climate, or maybe even on another planet.
You might even be able to predict unexplored archeological sites by estimating where forgotten civilizations might have lived, for example in the formerly green Sahara, or in under water regions that used to be dry land.
I was born in basically the best country in the world, my family worked hard to make sure I get a great life. I can worry more about whether or not a place I want to live in gets enough snow, as opposed to whether I can earn enough money there to eat. I have access to good food, gyms, beautiful American wilderness. I am so, so lucky and deeply grateful for all this
Question for Thomas Sowell.
Who taught you to hate yourself?
-Malcolm x
I would for this man to be on the joe rogan podcast
A good reason for an Israel/Gaza canal. It would improve trade between Europe, India, China, the middle east and east Africa. Trade brings people together.
Anglo-Saxon power⚡️⚡️☘️🍀🇺🇸
I really like Peter Robinson's interview style. He gets Dr Sowell to discuss the most insightful parts of his books, like geography's role on equality.
Thank you again for your detailed explanations
Another great video Sir. I especially like your last statement. The World is not a level playing field. Different areas have there problems be it Tornadoes, drought, cold, or whatever.
That was an amazing articulation of “overall” EVERYTHING!
Japan is an isolated island with nearly zero natural resources. They are the most sophisticated culture on earth. Face the fact that it's genetics! The primitive people in Africa had every advantage with incredible natural resources. They are just less developed people.
The world is not a level playing field. It’s a sphere so even if you walk in a straight line you’ll go in circles.
Most people who demand equality wouldn’t understand a single word that was said in this video. Mainly because they don’t care. They just want equality.
I'd own every Sowell book on audio if it were narrated in his own voice. I find his voice compelling.
"The world has never been a level playing field." The Left: Lets Level the World until it is. The right: Are you nuts? The world as it exists.
