Untold Stories from Josh McDowell: A Conversation
My father, Josh McDowell, has been speaking, writing, and debating for over 55 years +. He is truly a pioneer in the modern apologetics movement, youth ministry, evangelism, and much more. In this interview, I ask him to share some stories, wisdom, and reflections (many of which) he has not shared publicly before.

This is one of the most encouraging videos I’ve ever seen in what God can do in a persons life if he but humbles himself before God. What an impressive man you are Josh McDowell. Thank you Sean for the great work you do in producing one great video after another!
Verses from KJV:
Proverbs 3:26 – For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
Isaiah 41:10 – Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
2 Corinthians 3:5 – Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
Oh wow! Evidence That Demands a Verdict had a great influence on me in college (in late 70s) when I finally realized what it mean to be a Christian and then had to decide if I believed it.
47 years ago, when my husband was in grad school and I was working at Wilson Library at UNC Chpel Hill, we saw signs all over campus saying “Josh is Coming”
Wish we had heard him then but later I read his books! Thank You
This is just such an amazing and encouraging video. I love the relationship you guys have, and it’s such an encouragement. Thank you both!x
Amazing
What a fantastic interview! God bless you both.
FYI…South Africa has three branches of government and a capital city for each. The administrative capital of South Africa is Pretoria, the legislative capital is Cape Town, and the judicial capital is Bloemfontein.
Okay, this needs to be made into a movie.
I think in some of those incidents God gave Josh the ability to speak in tongues with those perfect dialects. Praise God.
JOHANNESBURG is NOT the capital of South Africa. We have 3 capitals: legislative, judicial and administrative – PRETORIA, BLOEMFONTEIN and CAPE TOWN respectively.
At 57:00 the true gift of tongues. Thank you
WOW Some incredible stories from an incredible man led by an even more incredible Savior ! MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was amazing!!! ❤
The scriptures also call some the children of satan. Everyone isn’t a child of God then? I’ll have to look it up and read it in context.
Such an encouragement and inspiration! Thankyou Sean and Josh. Love your show Sean. Yes, I keep sharing your posts. Thanks again.
Your dad really personifies the joy of the Lord.
This is quite narcissistic.
This is so good. Thanks for doing this. So great.
Thank you this was great, so appreciate you guys, grace and peace 🕊️🙏
Woah incredible story of speaking in South Africa around 37minute mark!
8:30 supernatural life living beyond his limits! Praise God!
Ooooh, such a joy to watch father and son interact! Josh the dad is so cute to behold (Sorry, I can't find a better word!). I super appreciate his childlike enthusiasm, his guilelessness, his humility, his infectious love for the Lord….a and Sean, I super love how you treated your dad with such tenderness, respect and admiration. I can just see how pleased Abba is with this father-son tandem.
May the Lord continue to bless the work of your hands and may He continue to drown you both (and your families) with His infinite kindness and steadfast love. 😍
Dang even a miracle thrown in there too
I was on headquarters staff at CCC when Josh came and I thought he was a young brash fellow. Wow God sure did use him
“When Jesus comes back the first people He is going judge are👨⚖️ crooked cops 👮♀️ “
🤣🤣🤣
I LOVE YOUR FATHER!
I had never heard of him growing up & im shocked as to why.
I want to grow up w/ the passion of Josh!
I love your dad's debate against Ahmed Deedat. He did not trip up his words, he did not back pedal on Deedat's objections to the Christian faith. He spoke fervently with such eloquence and patience. He was not intimidated by Deedat's grandstanding. He destroyed every argument and objection Deedat threw at him with the power of God's word alone. God bless.
Fantastic stories, Wow!!! One thing, as a South African…Pretoria is the capital (executive), though our judicial capital is Bloemfontein (The place Tolkien was born at), and the legislative, which is Cape Town.
I enjoyed very much watching this conversation. God bless you both! I've just gotten to know your dad and you only recently, like less than a month LOL
Sean and Josh, thanks for this precious moment you shared with us. Ask Josh to tell you about Toby miller, w wheelchari bound person the world saw as useless but Josh saw value in her potential.
I'm watching this in August 2021, and I am super encouraged. I read More Than a Carpenter in Bible College (in Central Europe) as a pretty fresh follower of Christ (almost 30 years ago) and it had a great impact on me. On all of us. I had no idea Josh McDowell had such an amazing life story. What a heritage to leave behind to his children and grandchildren and all of us. I can't wait to watch part 2 and hopefully even more. THANK YOU 💖
Yolande here from South Africa. Absolutely love this interview. As a side note, the capital of South Africa is indeed Pretoria and not Johannesburg.
What a wonderful father
Josh McDowell is a great treasure.
Nothing particularly bold about repeating the patriarchal script of the last several thousand years. Yawn.
Does Josh McDowell have a book about his life? I would love that.
Love these two men of God. Years ago I was in a Christian bookstore waiting on my children to use the restroom. As I waited, I reached up and touched two books while there, “More than a Carpenter”, which I had never heard about and a .49 cent “Book of John”. For some strange reason I bought them both. Left to pick up my 13 year old son who had recently changed his social media profile to agnostic. When I arrived a man was telling my son that two books that helped him come to Christ in Amsterdam were “More than a Carpenter “ and the Book of John. In that moment I didn’t say that I had just purchased them. It was like a kiss from Heaven knowing God was moving on our behalf. I gave the books to my son and told him God was big enough to question but to look for truth. Happy to say he is back pointing people to Christ.
Thank you for these podcasts Sean. Really being blessed by these.
Love this! In the 80's and early 90's I chaperoned youth groups to Josh McDowell conferences in the Birmingham area. What a blessing to hear and know that the young people that had been entrusted to me for the evening were hearing truth and in a way that they understood. When my husband & I were newlyweds we chaperoned our youth group to a camp where Josh was speaking. This venue was in the Blue Ridge mountains and, lets just say it had a lot of distractions. Sean, you were with your dad and was about 10 years old? One evening my husband & I were looking for our youth and ran into you both prayer walking in the mall area. We all had the same concerns that week. Many years later our daughter comes back from SLU in Orlando and was talking about their speaker who was a professor. Dr. Sean McDowell! What a blessing to see what God has done, doing & will do in using you both for the furtherance of His kingdom.
This was great.
Why don't you try to try this way progressively or regressive who's infatuation with relegation nullification is it. –ah ha and. Just. Gloss over becsyfet you the convenience of it and lightspeed to worse
To have a dream that one day. Murders of spirits will be prosecuted and other nonphysical positivities yea good just know that cpuhg rvye belueve in anything that fortunate there ie. That entire. set of i wanton offenders are not dumb or stupid yea and may tha entire hierarchy of *** dejas come back on you yea on personea thay are ypur best victims
Great interview, and as a South African, I especially appreciated the stories of Josh being down here. Johannesburg is our economic hub, the centre of our stock exchange, but not our capital. We actually have three capitals for the different functions of government, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein. Pretoria is our main administrative capital, so Josh was right 🙂
This is SUCH an amazing, spiritually encouraging, conversation. So glad I've watched.
Amazing interview. The best part for me though, was seeing the smile on Sean's face throughout the interview 🙂
