The next time you hear a politician call for “common sense gun control,” listen for the details.
You are likely to be treated to a torrent of platitudes about assault weapons, gun show sales and other half-measures.
These sorts of proposals are rooted in a theory of gun control that has been around since the 1960s. The basic idea is that fewer guns equal less gun crime.
But for this theory to have even a chance of working, drastic reductions in the supply of guns will be necessary. Everything else amounts to security theatre.
The late Senator Howard Metzenbaum, a strong gun control advocate, explained it this way: “If you don’t ban all guns you might as well ban none of them.”
But few, if any, politicians who call for “common sense gun control” have the courage to propose this.
Even putting aside the issue of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which affirms the right to keep and bear arms, a gun ban has no broad popular support. Never mind the conservative states, handgun ban referendums failed in two of our most liberal states – Massachusetts in 1976 and California in 1982 – by large margins. No serious attempts have been made since then.
Recently Australia’s gun control efforts have gained new prominence as a possible model for the United States to follow.
Let’s take a closer look at Australia.
In 1996, after a lunatic used a semiautomatic rifle to murder 34 people in Tasmania, the Australian government banned all semi-automatic rifles and repeating shotguns.
Owners of roughly 700,000 registered firearms – about a quarter of the country’s three million total guns – were required to turn them in for destruction. The government called this a “buyback,” but in fact no one had a choice.
As my research shows, this model will not work in the United States for the simple reason that the US has roughly 325 million guns. This is orders of magnitude more than any other country. Even if the Australian plan were tried in the US and worked to perfection, we’d still be left with over 200 million guns, including handguns which account for nearly 80 percent of gun crime.

If you interpret the 2nd Amendment even close to how that particular proposal suggests it should be, every single citizen should be able to purchase nuclear codes. That would work out totally fine…. right?

Actually, I never heard a single honest let alone practical proposal from that political corner about what to do to counter gun-related violence. None at all. Nothing…. we dont need to do anyrhing about guns. We dont need to do anything about guns because guns are not the problem. At most they are a symptom. If guns were the problem and everyone would be peacful and non violent without guns then why are people buying guns? The problem is with society. People want to live in a fantasy world that simply doesnt exist snd because of that arw not capable of living in the real world. These .ass shooters arnt causing all this death because they have easy access to tools that make it simple. They manage to cause all that death because you want to pretend they dont exist. This isnt happenong because THEY have guns its happening because YOU refuse to have guns. If an ar15 is capable of killing a large number of people in a short amount of time but as little as a quarter of those people also have ar15s then it ca t really kill all those people now can it?

1) More gun free zone signs
2) Make murder illegal. That worked for drugs and robbery.
3) Education on gun laws so criminals don’t accidentally have them.
Save the 2 nd Amendment and keep America free.
If a gun kills people then my pencil failed all my math tests in school. In a world of insanity, guns are a peacekeeper. More violence is commited with blunt or sharp and pointy objects than firearms. In most cases firearms are used to stop violence. So any liberal that wants to take guns promotes extremism as they refuse to address the real problems. Guns in the hands of people encouraged to be victims and encouraged to be violent by there media.
It’s silly to ban guns because criminals will ALWAYS find ways of either getting guns illegally or using other weapons like hammers and knives.
Yet you dont mention that every country that has banned guns has another problem. Violent crime soars, then authortarians rise to power.
Shall not be infringed, i believe every gun law, act or regulation is unconstitutional period.

It's no accident that there hasn't been any land attack on the US from any country, they know the US civilians are armed and the outcome wouldn't work in their favor.
Since the U.K. was disarmed in the 80's, gun crime has gone up.
I can understand a hunting gun for sport, or a handgun or rifle to protect yourself, your family, or your business. But why would anyone – except for the police or military – need a machine gun? All those school shootings and massacres were done with machine guns. We are not going to be invaded by England, and the Obama administration will not turn this country into a communist dictatorship.
