In the town where I matured in El Salvador, we had one school. It was old and run down. There weren’t enough teachers. There weren’t adequate books. However my mother was a figured out lady, and she had a plan– an incredible strategy. I and my siblings would not get our education in El Salvador. We would get it in America..

We left our home, our household– whatever and everyone we had ever known. I guess you could say it was an extreme example of school option..

It was a miserable bus ride to California– hot and long. We made it.

That was the simple part..

My mother hardly spoke English. I spoke none. I didn’t get much compassion when I grumbled to her that it was too hard to find out in American schools. We had reached the promised land– the guarantee of an excellent education, of limitless chance. English– great English– was needed. So I discovered it. My mom made sure of that..

With that kind of background, you can picture that I put a premium on the education of my own kids. So when my boy approached first grade, I took a difficult take a look at the federal government school in our neighborhood..

I saw no good future there for my child. I didn’t have the money for personal school.

I discovered that my district used something they call “an essential school”– kind of like a charter school– where they stress reading, writing, and mathematics. The test results at this school were higher than at the federal government school.

Many other moms and dads had actually come to the same conclusion. There weren’t enough slots at the school to meet the demand.

My son’s education was going to be determined by a lottery game? I was disappointed and angry. I had no option– no option..

He didn’t get in the very first year. But he did in the 2nd year. We got lucky..

This didn’t make me any less angry, though. I chose to do something with my anger. I chose I would run for school board and push for every moms and dad to have a choice of schools for their kids. It shouldn’t be a matter of luck.

I had no experience running for local workplace. I guess that was enough since I won.

Like my long bus trip from El Salvador years earlier, that proved to be the simple part. The federal government school system remained in worse shape than I believed. Registration was declining, however costs were increasing. We had more teachers making more money teaching fewer kids– without any test enhancement to reveal for it..

Introduce competitors– due to the fact that competition almost always makes things better. To the teachers’ union, it was treason.

Came the nasty e-mails. Then the awful tweets. When I would not stop talking, the union loaded board conferences with their activists. They booed me. Called me names you wouldn’t think. I was even physically threatened– all because I had made the case for school choice..

When they could not intimidate me, they tried to get me tossed off the school board. When I decided to run for a second term, the union leaders stated war.

But I won. Once again. This time, with more votes than any other candidate.
