What Is Net Neutrality? | 5 Minute Video
For months, it seemed nearly every media figure was in hysterics over the impending repeal of net neutrality. Then, net neutrality was repealed… and nothing much changed. So what exactly is net neutrality, and why do so many people have such strong opinions about something they don’t understand? Jon Gabriel, editor-in-chief of Ricochet.com cuts through the hysteria to bring you the facts.

Net Neutrality means that the government will—one day—control the internet.
“Wait a second!” I can you hear you saying. “That sounds bad.” But almost everyone you know says that Net Neutrality is good. Doesn’t “neutral” mean that no one is picking winners and losers, that everyone is equal?
Maybe according to the dictionary, but not according to the people behind the Net Neutrality movement. For them, “neutral” means the government regulates the internet like a public utility—and that means bureaucrats making key decisions about how the internet is run.
And that’s exactly what happened in 2015.
The Federal Communications Commission—or FCC—under the Obama Administration, came up with Net Neutrality rules and regulations and imposed them on consumers. No open hearings—they just did it.
Here’s what they said: Internet Service Providers, or ISPs—AT&T, Verizon, and other companies that lay the cable that goes to your house—are basically monopolies like your typical utility company. To prevent abuse of this position, Net Neutrality rules prohibited them from charging websites different prices no matter how much or how little bandwidth they use.
But this is exactly the opposite of what utilities are allowed to do. Electricity providers, for instance, are allowed to create pricing tiers—the more you use, the higher the price goes. If you use significantly more power than your neighbor, you pay more for the privilege.
“Net Neutrality” forces ISPs to charge all users the same price no matter how much data they send through the internet.
It’s a bad idea. Here’s why:
The internet consists of a physical infrastructure consisting of cable and phone lines that carry the data—we call it “bandwidth.” But of course, there’s a limit to how much data it can carry. In 2014, just two companies, Netflix and Google (which owns YouTube), consumed more than 52% of the total bandwidth of the entire internet. All those data-heavy movies and videos clog up the “pipe.”
To combat this massive resource drain, the ISPs floated the idea of creating “fast lanes”: bandwidth that would be dedicated to the big users in exchange for higher usage rates. You use more, you pay more. Believe me, I’m no fan of ISPs, but shouldn’t they be allowed to charge companies more if they use more bandwidth?
Furthermore, if companies like Google and Netflix have to pay higher prices for more bandwidth, they’ll be motivated to find new ways to push more data through the “pipe.” And creative startups would no doubt see a great business opportunity to do the same thing.
End result: More efficient, faster internet. Consumers win.
The big bandwidth users didn’t see it this way. Instead, they lobbied for the new rules to prevent the ISPs from charging them differently than anyone else. Naturally, they want to pay as little as they can for bandwidth. So, they mounted a big PR campaign to convince the public to back the new regulations. And it worked. How could it fail with a name like “Net Neutrality”?

I agree with prager on a lot of things but definitely not this one.
i absolutely knew there was deception involved when barak hussein obama was mentioned
I support net neutrality, all isps should be legally required to provide the full internet speed that you pay for 24/7 and to process all lawful traffic that you send over the internet. This is essential to protect free speech.
honestly, i dont care if ISP charges google, youtube or netflix more, as long as they dont charge me extra for accessing netflix youtube etc.
Net neutrality ended, and nothing bad happened.
This was such a farce of a debacle primarily because the issues cited with the repeal already happened like throttling speeds
Part of why is because they had a monopoly in my town of Jacksonville. Google Fiber wanted to build a presence here, but due to ordinances and influence by AT&T/Comcast as the only competitive providers it was constantly pushed back until it was abandoned altogether. Since Net Neutrality's repeal we've gotten Earth Link, T-Mobile's thrown their hat in the ring, and several others who force quality and innovation now that the big two aren't protected any longer
It's not to say there aren't some excerpts worth keeping like protecting smaller websites from being blacklisted due to woke slacktivists, but that and Net Neutrality existing together are not mutually required
Need to get more utilities away from the Government…
Okay, so, from what I’m gathering, net neutrality is the idea that everyone’s internet speed(up and down) is the same, versus everyone’s internet speed is equal to what is being charged.
Thus, I am against net neutrality, because of efficiency. ISPs will have to charge inordinate amounts more in order to sustain their architecture. I’d estimate close to $2000 a month per building. This would enable everyone, regardless of who it is, to have a 25 Gbps speed, or 3.125 gigabytes per second. Reference: EPB of Chattanooga
For reference, gamers only need 50 Mbps+, or 6.25 megabytes per second per person, for a good internet connection in this day and age. Source: experience. Federal government would even say lower, if you cite the FCC, I think 20 Mbps, or 2.5 MBps.
The conversions are internet speeds in megabits(or Mb), gigabits(Gb), megabytes(MB), and gigabytes(GB).
Anyone whose internet usage is less intensive than gaming, so not doctors, not engineers, just everyday Joe’s, their internet could be as low as only one megabit, and be OK. Being well-off would be 6 Mbps, and so on.
The government effectively created the monopolies that AT&T and Verizon now are.
Disagree with Prager on siding with the isp monopoly, but agree with their censorship argument big time. No one censors more than proponents of net neutrality
Nice Propaganda!!!! How much they pay you to publish this nonsense?
I knew better than to click this video
Love how the guy says that he isn't a fan of the ISPs yet the whole video is about him spewing their talking points.
Pick a side
This is the most leftist video on pragerU
So this is why Netflix price increased and other online subscriptions.
Why does this come across as propaganda?
Joe Biden is evil.
Most of your videos are great but damn, sometimes they swing too far right.
this is straight up propaganda wtf lol
PragerU is not a credible source of information!
The blanket hypocrisy of all these folks wanting Facebook ect… controlled. the ISPs are largely owned by GOP
PLEASE LOOK at much better researched video on Net Neutrality instead of this propaganda from PragerU. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6fWuUpyPG4&list=WL&index=2
I feel sorry for the people believe in this PragerU $hit! So much misinformation and half-truths to the people who watch this channel.
Thank you for that
Remembering libtards freaking about net neutrality. Bye u won’t be missed
Remember when everyone lost their shit about this only for almost nothing happened
This was a half-truth. Good job, government.
Hail to the corporate over lords of the internet. You gave it up so now you get to enjoy the loss of your freedom of speech on the largest most profitable social media websites. You failed to understand what you were contending with and had gave the internet up for profit. Freedom of speech is virtually overwritten by the whims of what's the most profitable. Government was the tool to keep the oligarchs at Bay. Now you've all doomed us to a destopian corporate future.
Ah yes lobbying
I was for Net Neutrality until I found out that Trump and other Republicans were against it. Then, after looking into it, I realized how much of a bad idea it was. At the same time, what do we do with internet censorship when companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google decided what can and can't be censored?
I've never seen a more thorough and complete misunderstanding of something presented so confidently I think in my entire life
The MOST disappointing thing about net neutrality is how stories of people who are born into satanic families and renounced it don’t populate in the search results anymore. The information on the black Jesuits and their occult practices are slim. I can barely watch Accurate videos on David Icke and the ‘reptilian’ race. I believe it was ultimately put in place to mask a lot of things done in the dark that not only the Bible warned us about, but people who move in those circles have helped explain the darkness off it all. Everything is watered down or made into a comedic joke for the past 5 years when prior we could hear stories from victims and see their evidence. All gone!
Simple question for people for net neutrality. What has changed for you in the past years after net neutrality was removed?
so obama ruined the internet
Longbeachgriffy.
Against net neutrality, so that we aren't forced to find shadier options
It would seem that Leftists have no morals at all and are infected as a group with psychopathic tendencies. They consistently call things what they are not in order to create false impressions of what they really are.
Uh what
Everything the left pushes sounds good until you really understand what it's really all about.
