When Big Business Went Woke
How is it that Big Business “got woke?” Once the bastion of country club conservatism, it’s now a fortress of radical leftism. Vivek Ramaswamy explains this amazing and disturbing transformation.

Wokeism—the idea that America is a systemically racist country and that your identity is defined by your race, your gender, and your sexual orientation—is no longer about challenging the system.
Wokeism is the system.
Blame the radical academics.
Blame the college administrators.
Blame the woke graduates.
But these aren’t the people who took wokeism mainstream.
That dubious distinction belongs to an unexpected source: Big Business.
That’s right—the largest companies in America, the standard-bearers of American capitalism—have injected this virus into the arteries of commerce.
Our story begins in 2008, following the mortgage crisis that led to the near-collapse of the entire banking system. Bankers got paid a lot of money when times were good, but got a bailout from taxpayers when times went bad. No wonder Americans were skeptical of capitalism, and for good reason, because it was really just crony capitalism.
The old Left wanted to punish the banks in the usual way—seize their money and redistribute it to “the poor.” But the new Woke Left added a new twist. The real problem, they said, wasn’t just poverty or economic injustice. It was a 300-year history of white patriarchy.
Ironically, this new idea (you know it as Critical Race Theory) presented Wall Street with a way out of their PR disaster—a way to go from being the bad guys to—poof!—becoming the good guys.
All they had to do was admit that their eyes had been opened. In other words, they “woke” up.
You want us to fix global warming? No problem. You want us to get on board with the transgender movement? Sure, we’ll do that too. Solve systemic racism? Sounds great, as long as you don’t talk about systemic financial risk.
They were happy to add token minorities to their boards. They were happy to post a black square on their corporate Instagram. They were happy to preach about climate change after flying on private jets to fancy ski towns. But they didn’t do it for free. As long as the banks said the right things, they would be left in peace to make their billions.
And, abracadabra, like a rabbit out of a hat, Woke Inc. was born.
Things went pretty smoothly, until the 2016 election. The man who won wasn’t supposed to win. And this time, the blame fell not so much on Wall Street, but on Silicon Valley.
But they had Wall Street’s playbook, and they followed it to a T. The new bad guys (Big Tech) could become the good guys just like the banks, as long as they made sure the next election went the “right way”; that is, the way the new Left wanted it to go.
In exchange, Big Tech would get to keep its monopoly power intact.
And that’s the untold story of how modern Big Tech censorship was born. The newly ascendant Left was able to delegate its dirty work to private companies to do through the back door what it could not do through the front door under the Constitution—namely, to censor protected political speech.
Then came Covid and the death of George Floyd.
Woke Inc. became the Woke Industrial Complex.
Now it’s not just Wall Street and Silicon Valley playing the game, but nearly all of corporate America as we know it.
Coca-Cola trains its employees “how to be less white” and issues public statements about voting laws that make it sound more like a super-PAC than a soft drink manufacturer. Pay no attention that its drinks are a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. Especially in the black community.
Nike condemns “systemic racism” in the United States and donates tens of millions of dollars to Black Lives Matter while it still relies on slave labor in Asia to make $200 sneakers that they sell to black kids in the inner city who can’t afford to buy books for school.

This guy is smart. He needs to be in a leadership position.
Wokeism is recognizing people's differences. Racism is hating someone for their differences.
This is so funny, vivek has said juneteenth is a dumb holiday, but made it a day off work at his company. He says climate change isn't important, but then stresses the ills of it. He then talks about "wokeism" fueling the culture war issues that the far right trump fandbase leeches off, yet rattle on abt how bad of a president he is. And so much more, the republican party is a party of ghouls and failed torch bearers and im glad trump shined a light on the depravity it is. Now make this video longer so i can edge in peace.
In terms of Nike selling expensive shoes to the black community while not buying school supplies, let me say as a black teacher, its not necessarily Nikes fault these families have their priorities backwards. Here my students cannot do math near their grade level and never have any of their own school supplies, but they have Jordan and Apple watches while mom comes into the school with her nails and hair done consistently. When students complain that the pencils I loan out to my other classes are not pristine, I tell them they could buy their own pencils. They say they "can't afford it." No! Black America, our priorities are backwards.
man this video reigns true with bud light and Disney and good luck for the president ship lets go brandon
This man is an….enigma.
He sets off all of my intuitive warning alarms..
The same is happening right now here in Brazil.
God bless PragerU for telling us the truth
This is garbage.
I never thought I'd see PragerU agreeing with Karl Marx on anything.
Excellent breakdown!
If the RESTRICT Act were to pass, and is carried out to its worst-case scenario so that it effectively becomes the 21st Century's Embargo Act, then all companies that do ANY sort of business AT ALL with "foreign adversaries" (which, for now, would include China, North Korea, Venezuela, Russia, and Cuba) would be BANNED from doing business with America! This would include Disney, Nike, Apple, BlackRock, and the NBA! Here's how a ban in America would affect the NBA: the NBA teams would no longer be allowed to play their basketball games within America. This would also cause America to BOYCOTT any and all Olympic games that take place in "foreign adversary" nations. Not only that, but ALL U.S. seaports would be CLOSED to traffic coming from and going to those "foreign adversaries". Yes, this would mean NO MORE imports from China! ALL these things would stem from a bill that's advertised as a "TikTok Ban"! And, just like with the Embargo Act of 1807, the 21st Century's "Embargo Act" would hurt America FAR MORE than it would hurt those "foreign adversaries"! I pray that America DOES NOT make the same mistake that it had made back in 1807! The Embargo Act of 1807 blocked shipping traffic to and from England and France.
Very well laid out and said
It's true. I'm from 3rd world country and I see those big companies are doing awful things to us.
American corporate execs aren't primarily driven by ideology. They are driven by a calculus that weighs the options and defaults to that which appears more likely to help profits. But their shortsightedness has come back to bite them. By opening the Pandora's Box of egalitarianism, they can no longer criticize foolish ideas or lifestyle choices.
How is this video not an indictment of Capitalism?
I think sanders didn't like this either. Despite him being a socialist or supporting social justice he doesn't like woke capitalism either.
Excellent video as always from Prager U! Recently just found Vivek on YT clip and I'm a big fan. Very happy to see he's running for President…the guy is a rockstar!
woow amazing video ,thanks for exposing these mentally ill
Brilliant
As Jesus said in the gospels, 'May thy Right hand knoweth not what thy left Hand doth'
Reagan was spot on. Government is not the solution to the problem – it IS the problem. Get government OUT of business, private lives, private property etc. Businesses should NEVER be bailed out. Let them crash and burn. That is the mechanism that capitalism uses to self-correct and ultimately self-heal the system and return it to proper operating order!
Very informative video
Those are all lies to American people
Woke culture arrived at my work 5 years ago. Now we all walk around on egg shells unless anyone is offended and a white male gets sacked.
I would like a listing of any Woke Companies. I do not wish to purchase any product/service from any WOKE company. Can anyone help me?
Thanks
Why did Big Business Go Woke? They let HR make all hiring decisions. HR is not the intellectual side of University Graduates and this type gravitates towards the woke agenda in every way. With HR in charge of hiring, forget hiring diversity as each and every job applicant is viewed through the lens of woke principals where the majority of the company are like minded and controlled by a echo chamber of like ideas with no dissent allowed. Slowly management succumbs to stupidity and guess who gets promoted. Woke Insane People!!!
I believe that during the 2020 election, the Woke Left did not COMPLETELY get their way. This was because they wanted Bernie Sanders (someone so far left that he makes Joe Biden look like an Alt Right individual) to be the U.S. President.
I think that’s what concerns me about the work place going woke and I’m starting to think that if big business does it then local jobs could do it to like school teachers maintenance workers and other jobs…
It concerns me about working with work places that are turning woke and put a target on your back… it’s a joke world out there…
87000 new IRS agents won't go after Woke, Inc because those companies can afford to pay for armies of cpas and tax attorneys. Instead, they'll go after the non-woke, small and midsized businesses.
I fear that Wokeism has gotten so big and so entrenched in society that there is now only ONE Person Who can and will destroy Wokeism: Jesus Christ. Once Jesus Christ returns to Earth, He will eliminate Wokeism through a single action: drop ALL of the Woke who will have survived the Seven-Year Tribulation into the Lake of Fire after telling them and the other goats: "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."
I think the point he misses is that woke ideas are so alien to us over-fifties that they would've never been adopted by our generation. This is being driven by young university graduates, entering the corporate world. They have already been indoctrinated.
It seems every business is upselling charity to gain simulated virtue points. In the checkout line, idk how legit the charity they are going to ask but they give it a name that is hard to turn down for the naive. This charity is a tax credit for the corporation, so they are wetting their beak on the donation. They have names like "Children's, Military Families, & just Foundation". They try to shame people in to giving. "What, are you going to really say no to the Children's Burn Unit Foundation?" But we don't know if 1% or 100% actually goes to charity & we don't know anything about the charity. I am tired of them upselling it as if they are so noble to raise money for what might be imaginary charities.
That's exactly what I tried to explain to my fellow truck drivers in Canada. You can't block roads that is illegal what you can do is stop delivering food it would take 2 weeks to bring the country to its knees.
Not as if any of this matters in the context of these same corporations lobbying the government effectively stripping us of our right to govern
Gracias from Texas 👍
From wall street to big tech. We never had a chance.
You looooove the word “woke”
"Sue''m" is easier said than done. Most every day Americans do not have the money to "sue'em". You're not wrong in saying this is what you need to do only that its very hard if not near impossible for most to do.
As a lesbian anarcho-capitalist, I agree that America is a crony 'capitalist' state and I am personally getting sick of partisan politics (both right and left) being shoved down our throats on a constant daily basis.
Yes, sue big companies that you don't agree with. Individuals always have great chances to take down multi-billion dollar enterprises in a law suit.
This is a great summary, but Highly recommend Vivek’s book, Woke, Inc. He absolutely nails it.
How do you upload this and think, wow, this sure defends my pro-conservative, pro-capitalist views?
