Does a design require a designer?

Keep that question in mind as we look at some new scientific discoveries about the origin of life and the universe.

Since Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution in 1859, many scientists have denied that design requires a designer. Darwinists have long claimed the mechanism of natural selection could generate the appearance or “illusion” of design without being directed or guided in any way. 

Recently, however, even staunch Darwinists have acknowledged that living things may have certain features that display evidence of actual intelligent design—though their ideas about who designed life on earth are, well, a bit out there.

Some prominent scientists have proposed that space aliens designed and then transported life to Earth. Evolutionary biologist and noted atheist Richard Dawkins has even floated this idea, suggesting that extraterrestrials may be responsible for a possible “signature of intelligence” in life. 

Indeed, no less a scientific genius than Francis Crick, who helped discover DNA, also proposed the idea that ET’s seeded life on earth to set the evolutionary process in motion. If true, we have an intergalactic Johnny Appleseed to thank for starting the chain reaction that has taken us from inanimate matter to Shakespeare.

So why have these scientists considered this seemingly far-fetched possibility? Because they have encountered a big mystery they can’t explain. It turns out that even the simplest living cells aren’t simple at all, and that discovery has made it extremely difficult to explain the origin of life. 

Recall from biology class that Crick and his partner James Watson discovered the structure of the DNA molecule. When they did, they also realized that the chemical subunits in DNA function like letters in a written language or digital symbols in computer code.  As Bill Gates has explained “DNA is like a computer program, but far, far more advanced than any software we’ve ever created.”

….which kind of suggests a master programmer. 

Could such an intelligent designer have been an alien as Crick and Dawkins have suggested?

Perhaps. But there are problems with this explanation. Big ones.

First, the spaceship theory does not actually solve the problem of the ultimate origin of life. In fact, it dodges the whole question of where this super smart alien came from. How did he evolve? How did the first life—and the genetic information necessary to produce it—first arise on his planet?

But there is something else the ET hypothesis does not explain. Modern physics has revealed evidence of design in the very fabric of the universe. Physicists have discovered that the fundamental physical parameters of our universe have been finely tuned, against all odds, to make our universe capable of hosting life. 

Even the slightest alterations in the values of key factors—such as the strength of gravity or electromagnetism or the masses of elementary particles—would render life impossible. 

We live in a kind of “Goldilocks universe” where the fundamental forces of physics have just the right balance and the properties of matter have just the right characteristics and configurations to make life possible.

To illustrate this idea, the late Cambridge physicist Sir John Polkinghorne imagined a universe-creating machine with numerous dials, each representing some critical parameter.  The various dials each have an almost infinite range of settings. Yet all are set just right.

Not surprisingly Polkinghorne and many physicists have concluded that the improbable cosmic “fine-tuning” of our actual universe points to a cosmic “fine-tuner.” 

As legendary Cambridge astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle argued: “A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect” has “monkeyed with physics” to make life possible.

Could this super-intellect have been an alien?

Not a chance.

So, I believe in ID, but the poor logic displayed in this video of trying to poke fun at the panspermia thesis is, to say the least, disappointing, and more akin to the tactics of the evolutionary co-religionists. The existence of alien-seeding of life forms here on Earth and the existence of God are not mutually exclusive. The video only grudgingly admits this. Sure, panspermia cannot account for fine-tuning of the Universe and the ultimate origin of life, that's where God comes in. However, panspermia activity here on Earth makes infinitely more sense to me than the nonsensical Biblical fairy tales about how life began and developed here on Earth.

  11. The real problem is that evolutionary science has now become a religion and anyone who speaks against their religion being factual is considered a heretic and is burned at the stake. There can be no debate in this atmosphere of canceling debate. But the fact remains that the probability of all of this arising by random chance is so incredibly impossible that there must be a designer and the likelihood that the designer is the God of the Bible is extremely high. Add to that the likelihood that Jesus is God visiting His creation to save us from our folly and, well, you have the Gospel truth. There is just no denying it. Or you can deny it, but you are denying reality.

  13. And imagine, if it weren't for Steve and a few others. Viability of design with demonstrated scientific evidence would be hidden from us.
    Instead we've got extreme excitement just imagining, the highly intelligent, that spent they're life building case for no need for God at all. Now may begin to have a sense that not only might there be design in equation but they were made for designers pleasure.

  16. Religion is FAITH based, dictionary definition meaning: belief in religious dogma without evidence!!
    There’s zero evidence of ANY god !!

    There zero evidence of any mythical Bible fairytale stories!! Bible is 90% disproven by science & logic, historically inaccurate, exaggerated or just false

    There’s no eyewitness or archaeological evidence of Jesus, as a historical and magical figure!! Nobody knows exactly when he was born or when he died, the earliest non secular being Tacitus or Josephus….which are highly debatable, many of Christians go to apologetics arguments never mention name Jesus or are just Christian forgeries
    It’s sad that these dumb foolish people are easily ignorant to facts and easily manipulated & indoctrinated to believe in such utter nonsense

  18. This topic deserves a debate video. We really miss these discourses especially for agnostics like me.
    I believe that there isn't enough proof to disprove or prove God and both arguments from each side have their merits and demerits.
    What's important is what you learn from each side. I live my life according to the ten commandments and how most religion says such as treat everyone equal and be fair and kind but I also use science in my daily life to root out myths such as what will give me the best results at gym or work.
    More people need more debates and that's what makes Prageru a great channel because the speakers are well spoken and engaging without being condescending and preachy.

  21. Here's the thing that brothers me.

    You have no more proof of god them the scientists that claim a multiverse is possible, you cannot give any actual evidence of God, you just point around and say "God did this."
    That argument is just as valid as an astrophysicist pointing around and saying, "Probability and infinity did this."

  24. I believe that murder is a bad thing. I also believe that there is a difference between killing and murder.
    I would lose every argument to present my case if I started with "the ten commandments say".
    Scripture is not the source of any sound argument. Scripture contains sound arguments, but they are not sound because they are found in Scripture; they are found in Scripture because they are sound.
    Present the sound argument and you will win. Start with Scripture and you will be mocked and derided.
