What’s a Greater Leap of Faith: God or the Multiverse?
What’s a greater leap of faith: God or the Multiverse? What’s the multiverse? Brian Keating, Professor of Physics at the University of California, San Diego, explains in this video.

How did we get here? I mean, literally. Not just you and me, but the whole shebang. How is any kind of life possible? The universe is a hostile place—solar flares, cosmic rays, asteroids flying about. The odds against our existence are truly astronomical.
Take it from me—I’m an astrophysicist. My job is to look out into space, at stars and galaxies, trying to answer these basic how-did-the-universe-come-to-be questions.
Well, those who have a religious faith have an answer: God.
The earth’s distance from the sun, the size of the atom, and a thousand other things large and small that allow us to live and to breathe and to think all seem perfectly tuned for our existence. To many, this design suggests a designer. But from a purely scientific point of view, the faithful have a big problem: They can offer no indisputable proof for this belief.
Because of the lack of hard evidence, it’s probably not surprising that over 70% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences declare themselves to be atheists.
But they have a big problem, too.
Absent a creator, how do they account for the existence of the universe, of planet earth, of human consciousness? How do they account for the existence of …anything?
Well, turns out they have an answer. And it’s become all the rage in scientific circles.
It’s called the “multiverse,” and according to many scientists, our universe isn’t the whole ball game; far from it. These scientists argue that there are an awful lot of universes out there—not just one or two, but an infinite number.
Let me explain:
13.8 billion years ago, there was a Big Bang—from something unimaginably small (we don’t know exactly what), the universe exploded into existence. How did it happen? Why did it happen? Doesn’t matter. ‘Cause it happened.
Immediately after the Big Bang, the universe underwent a rapid expansion. Think of a gush of bubbles exploding from a seriously shaken soda can just after it’s popped open. Cosmologists call this the Theory of Inflation.
As the universe inflates and expands—the bubble universes grow and separate to become their own distinct entities, each with their own unique properties. In other words, new universes are spawned—and not just a handful…an infinite number of them.
Some of these universes would be too cold for life, and some too hot. But, with an infinite number, surely one is bound to get it just right. In short, you and I are just an accident that, given enough universes, was inevitable.
But, wait—there’s more. Because there are so many universes, it’s very likely, according to the multiverse scenario, that everything that could possibly happen does happen in one universe or another. That girlfriend who broke up with you? You’re married to her in another universe.
Does this sound a bit far-fetched? A little science-fictiony?

Those are not the only two options. This is a classic false dilemma fallacy.
When you can't explain something say God. At one time, man feared night when the sun came up it was God. Thunder, God. Rain,God. Drought,God.Eclipse, God. Earthquake,God. Is everything coincidence or God's will?
"How do they account for the existence of anything?" It's called an unknown, and dismissing the unknown to a "god" is absurdly unscientific. The Big Bang and the Multiverse are THEORIES, they don't require "faith", if you don't like these or other theories, feel free to come up with your own or simply choose to believe whatever you wish. Dismissing scientific theory due to your primitive religious beliefs is inherently biased and decidedly unscientific.
It's actually simple. God created science. (Wheteher you believe it or not.) At this point, the human brain can not fathom God's intelligence/science.
So, man really is in no position to declare God's non-existence, and 'believe' in his incomplete/faulty understanding of science.
I say most atheists simply have problems with their fathers.
The atheists believe in the Italian version of the recipe for the spaghetti monster.
The multiverse is just an idea suggested by a select group of physicists. It's not really even an hypothesis because it's untestable. For that reason the majority of physicists don't take it seriously. In fact there is, and has been, a backlash within the scientific community for just that reason. They consider it a waste of time because it's unfalsifiable. It's still en vogue with a vocal minority mostly because of its proximity to string theory, an hypothetical "theory of everything" that fits general relativity with quantum mechanics.
Even that minority of physicists readily admit that it may very well be false, but that the math checks out and it's as good as any other "theory of everything" currently in circulation.
In short, they're really just looking for a way to merge general relativity and quantum mechanics, which is the holy grail of modern physics.
People who believe in a multiverse are shooting themselves in the foot. Infinite universes means everything is possible and makes the existence of a being as powerful and omnipotent as God a certainty.
You required less than 90 seconds to straw man a fringe hypothesis.
Scientists do not have a big problem, or any problem at all when you get right down to it. The original life, the universe, everything. We don't know. Religious people have one big problem. If there is a God how can we know anything about him or her. God is all knowing for example. Most religious types will give tat as an attribute but why? God is all powerful. This seems even less likely considering the world is alive with power, the stars the atoms. Seems like it God is hind that power, in a sense is that power then it would ake itself known. God is all loving. Now this just runs counter to our senses. Take mankind out of the equation d just look at the natural world. Birds that lay eggs in another birds nest not only growing at the expense of the parents energy but physically ejecting the parents own children. Parasites that drill into an eye causing blindness pain and starvation. The natural world is a horror show. Of course you don't have to think too hard to see that the world as made ould ot e the work of a all knowing, all-powerful all loving god. So we are left with a God beyond our logic, our understanding, our comprehension and yet somehow in spite of that God is important. Just my opinion.
Easy in non of the infinite universes will there be mind. Because mind can not come from dead matter nor does it provide any evolutionary advantage.
Dr. Keating sounds like an exceptional professor, one who can properly ground a clueless, naive youngster with concepts grounded in reality and faith. Atheists are arrogant cowards. They think the majority of people who ever lived, and respected a God, were ignorant fools. They think they're smarter than everyone else. And, they don't have the courage to allow space for faith in their empty lives. They're boring. People who despise God and reject Him are not interesting. They lack true humility. They know nothing but won't admit it. Instead of being like Dr. Keating and being optimists, they try to force their pessimism and despair on the rest of us. They study life, but join the culture of death, denying the greatest miracles and potential energies of God's creative ways. I would never tolerate any knowledge from an atheist because they've closed their mind to limitless possibility. They might want answers, but only because it's their ambition for attention and accolades. True wisdom seeks the source of wisdom itself…God. Jesus, God incarnate, came to this unique planet for a specific purpose. He isn't doing this everywhere, to infinity, in a ridiculous multiverse. God isn't a moron like most scientists. God had a plan and it's all perfect. Humanity thinks it knows, but has no idea. Science doesn't have all the answers. Science is only a branch of fact-finding. It's neverending because humanity will never have the ability to discover the wisdom only God possesses. Science is amateur, if not elitist. Like the Pharisees, they're mostly unbelieving hypocrites. They think they know, but they're clueless about what's really important. Even the smartest scientist is useless without faith. Great video. Thanks PraegerU.
So much dishonesty, misleading, wrong quoting and unscientific nonsens in just 4 minutes. Amazing how dressed up religious nutcases try to peddle their nonsens. And this from a country that dresses itself as the guiding light of the western world.
This is just sad and pathetic, like almost everything you propagandists dish out, PragerU.
god
People withing the science community don't believe in the multiverse. It's at best a hypothesis that has no concrete evidence. It's clear that PragerU has no idea what goes on in the science sphere.
How do you tell the difference between a universe that was created vs not created? Right now we only have one to measure.
Like string theory, multiverse theory is just another version of God theory
Is the multiverse a reaction to the big bang, to get around the implications of fine tuning, or was there prior support for the multiverse hypothesis?
PragerU: "We don't have nearly enough hard proof as them. Though they've put science to the test more than us, they don't want to put god in their vocabulary. AAAHHH science is illegitimate."
Indian mythology supports multiverse theory, it says that there are many creators & their created universe but they all have one common sustainer.
Without God we can live but not without faith.
I fail to say why this is an either/or scenario.
Would the universe exist without man? Would God exist without man? Without man the universe will go on its merry way matter of fact we are less than the blink of an eye as far as the universe is concerned. But what would God do without man? No one to worship him, no one to love him, no one to fear him seems to me God would be kind of either lonely or useless without man. It is said God gave us free will but free will for what? With a lot of religions it is like God says either his way or the highway do what he wants or burn in hell. That sounds like a pretty coercive free will. It's like telling the wife she can go out shopping but if she buys anything she will be punished.
The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know. Thank God!
The multiverse hypothesis kills the argument from fine tuning, showing that design is not the only possible explanation. You don't need to prove it for this purpose — as long as there are multiple possible explanations for the same phenomenon it cannot be claimed there are no alternatives.
Biblical faith = the demand for belief in the absence of evidence [Hebrews 11:1]
Religions demand faith.
Science, in contrast, demands proper and sufficient evidence.
Neither your god hypothesis nor the multiverse hypothesis is rationally believed without proper and sufficient evidence.
Rational belief is tentatively held, and subject to testing and revision. Biblical belief is not.
For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.
Ecclesiastes 5:7
The multiverse is a fudge factor to make the scientists' world view fit the reality
What was the point of this video? I mean, we're talking about a system of corruption, oppression, and population of manipulation that has been working on expanding and maintaining it's power over humanity for the last 2000 years vs a scientific hypothesis held by a number of theoretical physicists that has inspired some neat sci fi and comic book story lines. When the Multiverse Believers form a Church of the Multiverse and demand that you believe or else they will burn you alive then we'll have something to discuss. Until then, let the nerds pretend that there is an alternate version of themselves somewhere who married his high school crush. As long as they keep making the world a better place I'm all good.
This video is hilarious. I love it.
70% are wrong.

Both smart and dumb at the same time
First of all the multiverse isnt treated like proof its a hypothesis an idea
No scientist will run to the multiverse when you bring up the argument of life because
If your point is how unlikely life in the universe is
Also consider how rare life is in the universe
There are many planets in the habitable zone that still dont have life
a build up of multiple random events will lead to something eventually
so many things had to go right for you to be born had even one of them been disturbed it would have been someone else in your place and they would be wondering the same thing you are
If you are talking about being honest with yourself how about saying you dont know rather than claiming god in everything?
I'm down for the multiverse, no doubt!
faith may absolutely be the ultimate requirement for any extended existence
however, salvation under one God requires only a mustard seed of faith, while salvation under one Accident requires indefinite mills of mustard seed bins…
i bear witness that there's only one true God whether by Accident or by Intent and that our dëjãvu parallel or multi universe is no God nor an Accident and also reveals no clear intent…
in either case I'd rather chance my faith on one belief, in one just, and one righteous mustard seed…
opposed to the collection of multiple beliefs and multiple mustard seeds that requires no order of righteousness or justice.
